A Bird’s Nest – A family of coots on a raft

Spring and summer are definitely my favourite seasons in Amsterdam. The sun finally starts shining again, and everything starts blooming. It makes the city just that much more beautiful. Also the city wildlife starts breeding again, of course.

When I cross a bridge near my house in spring or summer, every year there’s a small coot family which built their nest on a raft in a canal. It’s so nice to see the mom and dad taking care of their little chicks. There’s a lot of people that stop and have a look at the small family under the bridge. And they know they’re being watched! Whenever you stop to have a look, one of the parents will quickly swim towards the bridge to check if you brought bread for them and their chicks. And whenever the chicks are old enough to leave the nest, shortly after will follow a second nest. To me it’s so special to see this; a little bit of wildlife in the busy city of Amsterdam!
