Amsterdam Roest – Citybeach and club in east

I am sitting on the quay wall, my feet dangle over the water. The little movements of the water surface of the bay reflect the late afternoon sunlight. Behind me there is a sandy beach and old industrial buildings. Run-down. Rusty. Roest. That’s the Dutch word for rust. And it resembles the atmosphere of this place. The melancholy feeling of transitoriness.

But Roest is not only a beach bar, it lends its terrain for all kinds of energetic activities. There are alternative food and art markets for example and on Mondays you can have your hair cut – so for people who keep on forgetting to see the hairdresser regularly – like me – it’s a welcome opportunity to just accidentally bump into one…

Amsterdam creatives are hailing it as a creative establishment. Having grown out of the underground, but still maintaining the old feel as lifestyle, turning it successfully into a business model…

The weekends and some days during the week see several DJ’s in the typical mix of 60s/70s, hip hop, funk and dance. Special cocktail nights spice up the mix.

Change since I was here last time: Roest has an open kitchen now. Flammkuchen, burgers, salad: just what you need after hanging out with beer in the sun.
