Andaz – I should say correctly: Hotel Andaz. Well it’s a hotel, and we don’t promote hotels, but I want to invite you to just enter this fabulous building and take a walk around on the ground floor, and check out the yard. The concierges are friendly and they are fine with people coming in and having a look.
Let me start first with a bold statement: this house is like a movie. It looks as if the designer had directed this house according to a script rather than simply “designing” it. In fact: the interior follows the story of Alice in Wonderland, rewriting its context using the the history of the Dutch VOC trading company in the Golden Age as a backdrop.
Every detail is part of the narrative: the giant lamp shades on the photo above (1.75m high) represent Alice’s dress while falling through the rabbit hole (the circles of light above the lamp shades as seen in the mirror walls on the photo).
When you enter the hotel it is you who is the giant, like Alice before taking the pill, the entrance hallway features tiny doors on either side, inviting you to have a peak, while you’re not really sure if you’re supposed to (figuratively speaking – they are just decoration).
But I am not going to expose every detail here… Just saying: I think it’s worth having a look.
