Some moments in the week are ideal for certain activities and Sunday afternoons are made for jazz. It is the ideal moment to sit back, relax, listen to improvised music and at the same time ponder on the past week and wonder what the next one is going to bring.
My favorite place to just hang back and enjoy the sounds of bass guitar and saxophone, which as a kid I tried to master, but due to a lack of talent didn’t succeed, is De Engelbewaarder. On Sundays, from 16:30 to 19:00, this literary café becomes home to locals with all kinds of backgrounds who come and listen to the jam session conducted by their jazz band.
During the rest of the week, this literary café is a good place to enjoy a good conversation, the art exhibitions of local artists, really fine pub food or a board game. But don’t open up your laptop here, — just grab a book from the shelf, and if there’s nothing you’d like to read, take a swing at the menu of beers. They have a selection of Belgian beers including some unfiltered ones.
But whatever you do, when the weather is nice, don’t stay inside. The terrace of ‘de Engelbewaarder’ is right next to the canal, just watch out when crossing the street and make sure your phone doesn’t fall into the water.
