Hot and happening, that’s the best way to describe what’s been going on over the last few years in the Van Woustraat in De Pijp. This neighbourhood has changed into an area with some very good places with excellent food and fine coffee. And always buzzing!
Firma Pekelhaaring is one of the early birds in the Van Woustraat and since their opening a lot of other restaurants have come here. This cafe/restaurant is about good vibrations – it’s always busy (reserve a table in advance) – and the waiters Merel and Fleur are happy and very relaxed.
Pekelhaaring serves honest and delicious food, so it’s back to the basic Italian kitchen with dishes like Porchetta from Tuscany, various antipasti and pastas and some great fish and meat dishes. It’s difficult to make up one’s mind because of the traditional meals on the menu and the weekly specials. For lunch I can recommend the Philly cheesesteak or the Spicy chicken with sweet & sour cucumber. Add a fine Pinot Grigio to it and you’re in for a nice afternoon.
At dinner time, the antipasti, pastas and salads can be ordered small or large. I stick with the Gnocchi with Asparagus. Yummy! The Tagliata di Manzo with rucola, balsamic and Parmesan is another favorite! And the Lamb with chard is always great. Arrggh, it’s difficult to make up my mind again for desserts, the cheesecake of white chocolate or a creme brûlée, a double espresso or homemade limoncello. And another bottle of wine!
