Meneer Malasch is first of all a gallery. But when I am talking about Meneer Malasch I am talking about Indie Indie. And that is one of the top (although mostly known by insiders only) contributors to the Amsterdam underground music scene. And Indie Indie is returning back to Meneer Malasch, with new shows from November on.
And that is underground, that is basement culture. And I had to find out that the 80s are really very much alive in today’s youth culture. Independent punk rock/ dark wave – for me it’s a dog biting its tail, a circle closing. The first concerts I attended in larger concert halls were Killing Joke, New Model Army, later Sonic Youth – 25 years ago – and now I find myself in a small basement with not yet famous bands playing a similar kind of music on eye level. Great.
Now they are called “Weekend”, “Black Marble”or “Hunter Complex”.
Event culture, basement culture. Ah, not to forget art: contemporary art, photography, lectures, I have to give credit to Meneer Malasch that he houses the expressions of subculture, since we all know that this hardly ever leads to filled pockets and a paid rent.
Well, I am excited to see the new round of concerts in the basement. The entry is on the channel side, by the way, a small iron door with a steep staircase will lead you down the abyss…
see you there!
