I love a good coffee and therefore couldn’t live without the Coffee Company. Luckily there are lots of them in Amsterdam. It’s an Amsterdam company and a bit like our version of Starbucks, but actually I’m happy to say it is a way better version!

Each of the different shops has its charm. But I like the one in the Van Woustraat best because of it’s personal atmosphere and because its ideal for chilling with friends, enjoying some alone time, or working. Upstairs is a living room area which is very comfortable, downstairs is great for working or just enjoying coffee and watching the world go by.

I also find this area very inspiring because its really mixed. Around here you will see lots of different cultures, young and old, students and freelancers. Every once in a while you can also enjoy exhibitions and live music with your coffee.

There is nothing here not to like. Friendly people, great fresh coffee (I love their iced latte), great food (I love their tosti with mango chutney), and a great atmosphere. The coffee they serve here is perfect, and they roast their own coffee here daily. So it’s as fresh as you can get!

Sitting here enjoying your coffee it almost has an feeling of not being in Amsterdam, and because of the location (you really have to know it to find it) it feels like an undiscovered gem. This will definitely become one of my favorite spots, and they’ve just opened a second shop on the Haarlemmerdijk!!

Check their facebook page for when they serve great a great breakfast on Sunday like for instance blueberry pancakes!

Pacific Parc is a great place on the ‘Westergasfabriekterrein’. Its open during the day for drinks and lunch as well as in the evening for dinner, drinking and/or dancing.

In the summertime the great attraction is the terrace outside which is very big and has sunshine all day long, but in the wintertime there is an even better attraction: a great looking fireplace in the middle of the room. It looks and smells great and warms you up when you need it!

Pacific Parc is open day and night and at night they sometimes have some really busy parties, although they aren’t really my cup of tea.

For lunch/breakfast/snack you should definetely try the “tosti” (croque monsieur / toasted ham/cheese sandwich). It’s delicious with lots of cheese and ham, pineapple or tomato. The great thing is that you get 1,5 tosti, which is exactly the right amount!

I don’t have lots of spectacular things to say about this spot so I’ll just keep it simple. It is simply a really good spot.

The good things are to begin with the location, right on the Nieuwmarkt with views of De Waag. Secondly the reading chairs by the window, very nice! Check out the lunch menu during the day which is tasty and affordable. And last but not least the different kinds of Belgian beers and the nice housewine are worth a try.

Don’t forget to order some bitterballen to go with your drinks and just enjoy!

I had never heard of Feduzzi Mercado Italiano until a friend took me there to get some lunch. She had been there before and assured me that their ciabatta’s were delicious. And she is right! Their ciabatta’s are mouth watering.

I’ve made it my personal project to try out all of the different kinds. Until now all the ciabatta’s I have tasted were great but one of my favourites must be the ‘Cortina’. This one is with mozzarella and salami. They give you a choice between ordinary salami and spicy salami. I’ve tried them both and like the spicy salami the best. But be aware because it really is very spicy. That combined with the creamy buffalo mozzarella is an absolute treat!

Another of my favourites is the ‘Feduzzi’. This ciabatta is filled with creamy mozzarella, grilled aubergine, and delicious pesto. Writing about it makes me hungry!

Besides ciabatta’s they also sell loads of different ready to eat food like cheeses, meats, pasta salads, and other things. Also the shop has a wall with shelves full of different sorts of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, dried and fresh pasta, coffee and all different kinds of wine.

Feduzzi’s is really worth a try. I’m sure you will not be disappointed!

The Utrechtstestraat starts at the Rembrandtplein and ends at the Frederiksplein. The street crosses all the canals and this is what makes it a very charming shopping street.

The street is good for shopping fashion and delicatessen. Also there are a couple of good furniture shops. (check out the other Utrechtsestraat spots on this website.)

Also if you are looking to get someone a present, this is the place to be. Besides shopping the street is also full of bars and restaurants, again you will find a variety of cuisines suitable for any budget.

You should really have a look here if you like to go shopping but don’t like busy shopping streets full of shops you see everywhere, the choice of shops here is really different and I think you could easily spend a whole day here if you count in stops for coffee, lunch, a afternoon drink and dinner to finish it of!

I never knew you were able to get good scones in Holland until I went to the Bakkerswinkel. Me and my friends met for lunch and started of having different kinds of savoury sandwiches which were all delicious. There is plenty of choice here and the ingredients used are tasty and fresh. The bread is nice and heavy so you are sure to be satisfied for the rest of the day after you get lunch here.

I have to admit that we were definitely satisfied, but we still couldn’t resist the temptation of ordering a scone as dessert. This was absolutely delicious. They have different kinds of scones, for instant with raisins, chocolate or cherries. They also have a wide range of different sorts of freshly made jam to go with it. Its really very good. And of course the clotted cream just makes it perfect!

This place really is the best! Broodje Bert is a great place for lunch, especially if you are suffering from a hangover. Famous (and my favourite) is the “Broodje Bert” sandwich, a large piece of Turkish bread with freshly grilled lamb meatballs. Besides the meat the bread is filled with lettuce, tomato, peppers, and lot of sauce. It takes a bit of work to get it down, but I always feel very satisfied after.

Besides the Broodje Bert they also serve several different sandwiches, burgers, and omelettes.

If you’ve had a rough night and you’re heading towards the city centre I would recommend you to give it a shot. There is no better way to start a (hung-over) day!

You really would’t expect to find a restaurant like this here in the eastern side of Amsterdam. Although the area is upcoming this restaurant really complements the area.

Comfort Caffe offers really excellent, delicious good food for an affordable price. They are open during the day for lunch and coffee but you can also have dinner here. Think of bruschetta with mozzarella and parma ham as a starter, or a trio of delicious cheeses. As a main course they mainly serve pasta. For instance with gorgonzola or truffle and parmezan cheese. Combine this with a good bottle of wine and that’s all you need!! Mmm, writing this down makes my mouth water.

Just make sure you’re early ’cause the kitchen closes at 21:00…

Have you ever been to a Berlin living room cafe? Vintage furniture, a bit run-down, Cafe Brecht is all about “Gemütlichkeit” – coziness, the translation is an approach at best. One of the ancestors of your German grandmother could have lived here, nothing would have changed, only time would have eroded the walls since then, and a bar and more lazy chairs would have been added.

Tea is being served in a teapot that looks like being taken right out of your grandmothers cupboard, there is freshly made cake, also a thing that you might be familiar with if you know a typical Berlin living room cafe. A selection of several German beers complete the menu.

It is very relaxed inside, time doesn’t seem to play a role, you can tell by the knitting gear that decorates the tables and invites you to just continue knitting, just like you grandmother would have done. In the evenings you might pop into some event, be it a poetry reading, be it a bit of live music, but that’s rather occasional. Lately Brecht was transformed into a pop-up store with fashion from one of the local art academies.

Actually what I like most about Brecht is that they sell my favorite brand of German beer – which is the original black forest beer “Tannenzäpfle”, and it’s the only place where you can get it in Amsterdam.

Van De Buurt is a bit of a newcomer in west. The neighbourhood has had a long history of not being taken care of, but the last years the winds of change have also been blowing through the streets of Bos en Lommer. One manifestation of these changes is café-restaurant Van de Buurt. The old inhabitants would think of vintage as a “not-being-able-to-afford-better”, but we love vintage because it has style. So we love to hang out in the afternoon on the old couches having a cup of tea right behind the large shop windows and watch people outside passing by at the channel. With better weather conditions Van de Buurt provides a terrace. Very relaxed.

But there is more. While the vintage corner covers only one half of Van de Buurt, the rest is a nice, and not even very small restaurant. You can have vegetarian food, Indian curry, and Spanish tortilla, all vegetarian, and with little creative touch. There is no menu though, only one meal a day, a three-course-menu, but for a reasonable price. The place is not over-run, so there is no need for a reservation. Still a pretty undiscovered gem in Bos en Lommer.

Sunday afternoon, a band called “A Boy Named Sue” is playing Johnny Cash cover songs, and the mood is terrific. They know how to make the crowd swing, and from something around 16:00 there is party at Hesp, the place is crowded. Even Henk Schiffmacher, the world famous tattoo artist, is spotted (it’s a bit of his home cafe). On Friday nights it is less crowded, but still a place to have good time. The bar tenders are doing their best to entertain, and you can tell they love their job.

But Hesp is not only a bar to have a good time on a Friday night, Hesp also accommodates a full Restaurant with a variety of international dishes for a reasonable price. On the Sunday afternoon live music events you can meet me occasionally, swinging out a weekends’ hangover to prepare myself for the following week on the job.

I must admit, when it comes to drinking beer, I have my favorite brand, but for people who are curious to try different sorts, Hesp has a whole menu of at least twenty different kinds of tap beer, this in addition to at least twenty sorts of bottled beer.

In the summer Hesp blinks out with one of the nicest terraces Amsterdam has to offer, right at the river Amstel. It’s the most mediterranean area of Amsterdam. But I am too much ahead now – it is still closed and we will have to wait a little until then.

Started about two years ago by a young entrepeneur ,you’ll find this lunch spot on the leeward side of the Singel, between Koningsplein and Muntplein (on the rear side of the Bloemenmarkt). The place uses only fresh, biological products for their sandwiches, wraps, smoothies and lemonades. My favorites are the wrap with salmon and the homemade lemonade. There are also (two different) soups, a couple of salads and on Thursday a special hot meal on the menu.

Furthermore they serve decent coffee and tea (fairtrade) and their cakes are definitely worth a try (especially the carrot cake). They have a good WIFI connection, which makes it ideal for those who’ll have to finish some business while consuming their lunch. In Spring and Summer you can enjoy the sun on a little terrace. Too bad that from 16:00 on the street in front of it gets jammed by cars and trucks. But until that time it’s a great observation post for watching people passing by.

One minor remark: it’s sometimes a bit difficult to get the staff’s attention (except from my favourite waitress on Thursday), for they are very talkative to the regulars (mostly friends of the staff/owner). For the rest it’s a good place to enjoy a delicious and ‘fair’ lunch.

Since this place is a little tucked away in a neighborhood in Oost, you could easily miss it. But you should not miss it, since this is a really cute and good brunch and lunch spot! Their motto is: stop eating shit, eat good food!

The products they use are mostly organic or honest, which you can taste. They have an extensive menu, with sandwiches served on slices of bread, fresh smoothies, soups, homemade carrot cake and my favorite chai tea’s.

Beter en Leuk means Better and Pleasant, and the atmosphere in this place is very relaxed with little benches in- and outside with comfortable pillows. Next to being a lunch spot it is also a small boutique, where you could find organic beauty essentials, clothes and gadgets. The high tea I can also recommend! And for the ladies; once in a while they offer workshops or special shopping evenings. So if you want to try something new, and you are in Oost give it a try!

Friday Next is a lifestyle store, exposition room and café all in one, a concept which is not that common (yet) in Amsterdam. But this concept store has a great inspirational collection of design furniture, jewelry, great leather bags and more wannahaves.

The bright store feels like a very nice decorated apartment, where you will find the café in the midst of the store. Here you can enjoy a coffee or a lunch, prepared with the fresh products of Marqt next door (see the Marqt article). Given the amount of laptops I saw during the week, this spot lends itself perfectly to get some work done.

Every two to three months a designer or famous international brand is asked to expose their work here. Furthermore this store is an inspiration for everyone who likes to pimp their home with an unique item! Definitely worth a visit when you’re near the Overtoom.

I discovered this place about a year ago ‘thanks’ to the GVB (transport company), when there was once again a big pile-up of metro’s in the tunnel near Waterlooplein (it happens frequently). Around noon I was heading towards the city centre when they asked everyone to leave the subway at Weesperplein. Because I skipped breakfast that morning I first wanted to grab a sandwich somewhere before looking for alternative transportation. From that moment on it’s one of the spots I’ll go for a quick sandwich whenever I forgot to eat breakfast again.

For a reasonable price (from €1,80 on) you can get a simple but okay sandwich. You can choose between brown, white or multigrain rolls, French baguettes or Italian buns (the latter two cost a bit more). As filling you have a wide selection of choices, from egg till smoked sausage or sliced meat-ball. For the sweet-teeth among us there are cookies, brownies, muffins and Indonesian ‘thousand-layer’ cake (we call it spekkoek in Dutch, try it out) available. For a shot of caffeine you can get coffee or tea for only €1,00 (watch out, this is not the premium quality stuff) and you can buy a copy of your newsletter when you forgot to bring yours.

If you’re in a hurry, you’re wallet doesn’t allow much luxury and you’re near Weesperplein, Convenience-to-go is the place to go!

There are many bagel bars in Amsterdam. The most famous one is of course  Bagels & Beans, a huge chain in Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands. But bigger is not always better… and Tony’s NY City Bagels is proof of this.

Tony’s probably the first bagel bar in Amsterdam, or the first of its kind. It’s located near Waterlooplein at the Jodenbreestraat (near the big Albert Heijn), where it has been for more than 15 years. The owner once told me that he wanted to create a lunchroom similar to those you find on the streets of New York (hence the name). If he succeeded is not the question, at least not to me. Tony’s just happens to be the best bagel place in Amsterdam, because it has all the right ingredients.

The bagels are delicious, the coffee is tasty and the muffins are among the best in the city. The staff is friendly, the ambience is great and fortunately not as noisy as at some of the branches of the chain mentioned above. I often find myself chatting with other customers, while normally I just like to read my newspaper.

For me Tony’s is a better version of many of the other bagel bars in the city, just because it focussed on the little things. Once again, bigger is not always better!

Noorderlicht Cafe is situated at the industrial NDSM wharf, a former shipyard at the waterfront. Now it’s becoming more and more of a trendy place to be for festivals and other events. Even though it’s becoming more up and coming, you still have to know where you’re going or else you won’t find it.

During the day Noorderlicht is a great place to sit outside, eat and drink and enjoy the view of the water and the central station on the other side of the water. This is ofcourse when the weather is good. But inside is also very nice and warm, with a couple of comfortable couches to sit on and sometimes even a real lit fireplace! The atmosphere is laid back, with sometimes live music or other events. The same atmosphere carries on during night time when the parties attract interesting crowds of people.

Combine a visit to Noorderlicht with rummaging through second hand vintage clothes at the IJhallen (check my IJhallen article) and you’ve got a perfect lazy Sunday afternoon.

When friends from abroad come visit me in Amsterdam, I like to take them to Vlaamsch Broodhuys. I’m a huge fan of good tasty bread and this bakery with modern lunchroom is one of Amsterdam finest.

At Vlaamsch Broodhuys they make all kinds of bread without any artificial additives and with a slow rising time of the dough. This is something you will definitely taste! Next to the bread, they serve a delicious array of cakes, pastries and quiches of which you can choose from. A nice small salad is served with every sandwich and some cake with your coffee or tea.

The modern and bright lunchroom has enough tables, a bar and when the weather allows a small terrace. When you want to celebrate something with your (girl) friends you might want to go for the high tea, it comes with a wide variety of bread, toppings and cake. Or when you can’t choose, try the platter for two people, it is really good!

I just found this cute spot with a friend of mine when we were wandering around at Haarlemmerdijk. Forget about teabags, here you will find the real deal and everything you’ll need to prepare a proper cup of tea! The tremendous amount of different teas, all arranged in transparent boxes where you can scoop the tea of preference in a little bag. They have over 60 flavors, from the standard earl grey to special mixes like the spiced grandma’s apple-pie.

Upstairs you will find the fresh white decorated tearoom, where you can enjoy a cup of tea or a big teapot. Treat yourself with one of the famous Lily’s cupcakes or an organic cookie to really make it a feast! And don’t worry coffee lovers will not be left aside, they serve biologic coffee (Bocca) as well.

The international chain of restaurants Vapiano has been in Amsterdam for a while now, but I’ve only discovered it recently. And although it has a gigantic international chain, I would still like to recommend it. Simply because the concept, location and especially the food is really good. 

Vapiano serves pizza and pasta which is made freshly in front of you while you are waiting. It is sort of a fast food restaurant concept with the main difference that the food here is healthy and fresh. 

Vapiano is situated next to the Public Library of Amsterdam (check the Public Library article). Lots of people that visit the library for work or study also visit Vapiano. It’s a great place to have a quick dinner by yourself or with friends. Also when the weather is good the terrace is a great and beautiful spot.

Singel 404 is one of my old time favorites. It’s a great place for breakfast or lunch mainly because you have loads of choice and in general everything on the menu is fresh and very affordable. They have lots of different kinds of bread and almost every filling you can think of.

Because there is so much to choose from I often get confused and just stick to my favorite: warm goat cheese and chicken. But obviously it is best to just try loads of different things! Besides sandwiches you can also order soups and salads. And of course a wide range of shakes, fruit juices, coffees, or even a glass of wine!

Because Singel 404 is very close to the University of Amsterdam it gets very busy, lots of (female) students take a long lunchbreak here and catch up with their friends. So be prepared to wait a while before you get your table.

De Drie Graefjes is situated on two locations in the centre of Amsterdam. If you are looking for a great lunch, high tea or cupcakes you don’t have to look any further. 

Their club sandwiches are delicious and very filling, the same is true for their salads. I would recommend the Tuna Club Sandwich and the Riviera Salad. If you want something sweet after, there is plenty of choice! The cupcakes and cookies are made by The American Bakery and are absolutely mouthwatering and delicious. 

Both locations have plenty of space and a nice terrace for when the weather is good. I especially love the tiny roofterrace at the location on the Rokin because its really secluded and kind of romantic!

They also do a great high tea for which you should make a reservation in advance.

The Maasstraat in the south part of Amsterdam is originally a very local street with a bakery, grocery shop and florist for the neighbourhood. But this suddenly changed when Patisserie Tout opened: a fashionable shop with gorgeous cakes & cookies.

They organize small tastings & courses to make desserts or to try out cakes. Herman den Blijker, one of our famous TV chefs, loves the place and passes it on his way from Rotterdam to Amsterdam, to buy his beloved macaroons. And I must admit, the macaroons are worth a detour. Especially the raspberry flavour.

They make a small but attractive apple pie & the red fruit tartlets look divine. So if you are a sweet loving taster, don’t miss on Patisserie Tout.

The beautiful & delicious cakes invite you to be obeyed.

Pompadour has a great location on the corner with the famous Spiegelstraat. It is modern and clean and quite large: a good spot for lunch with delicious lunch dishes.

They became famous thanks to their chocolates & cake. They have great éclairs and lovely apple & apricot tarts. But the famous raspberry a la neige with white chocolate is also tasteworthy.

Pompadour also has a branch in the 9 streets (Huidenstraat 12), with a romantic and Marie Antoinette style.
