There is nothing here not to like. Friendly people, great fresh coffee (I love their iced latte), great food (I love their tosti with mango chutney), and a great atmosphere. The coffee they serve here is perfect, and they roast their own coffee here daily. So it’s as fresh as you can get!

Sitting here enjoying your coffee it almost has an feeling of not being in Amsterdam, and because of the location (you really have to know it to find it) it feels like an undiscovered gem. This will definitely become one of my favorite spots, and they’ve just opened a second shop on the Haarlemmerdijk!!

Check their facebook page for when they serve great a great breakfast on Sunday like for instance blueberry pancakes!

I can’t repeat enough how much I like cheese. This is why visiting De Kaaskamer is a treat for me. Looking at (and smelling) all the different sorts of cheese makes my mouth water… You don’t even have to go into shop to smell the (I think delicious) smell of cheese!

I usually go here to get a delicious baguette for lunch. You can pick any sort of cheese or meat and other toppings and the baguette will definitely fill your stomach for the rest of the day.

The shop is hard to miss, you can smell it meters away. When you go inside you won’t know where to start! Luckily the personnel is really friendly and they let you taste different cheeses too.

My tip would be to get yourself a baguette, and to eat it somewhere beside one of the beautiful canals. Then on your last day in Amsterdam head to the shop again and fill your whole suitcase with CHEESE!!! Enjoy!

Pacific Parc is a great place on the ‘Westergasfabriekterrein’. Its open during the day for drinks and lunch as well as in the evening for dinner, drinking and/or dancing.

In the summertime the great attraction is the terrace outside which is very big and has sunshine all day long, but in the wintertime there is an even better attraction: a great looking fireplace in the middle of the room. It looks and smells great and warms you up when you need it!

Pacific Parc is open day and night and at night they sometimes have some really busy parties, although they aren’t really my cup of tea.

For lunch/breakfast/snack you should definetely try the “tosti” (croque monsieur / toasted ham/cheese sandwich). It’s delicious with lots of cheese and ham, pineapple or tomato. The great thing is that you get 1,5 tosti, which is exactly the right amount!

I don’t have lots of spectacular things to say about this spot so I’ll just keep it simple. It is simply a really good spot.

The good things are to begin with the location, right on the Nieuwmarkt with views of De Waag. Secondly the reading chairs by the window, very nice! Check out the lunch menu during the day which is tasty and affordable. And last but not least the different kinds of Belgian beers and the nice housewine are worth a try.

Don’t forget to order some bitterballen to go with your drinks and just enjoy!

I had never heard of Feduzzi Mercado Italiano until a friend took me there to get some lunch. She had been there before and assured me that their ciabatta’s were delicious. And she is right! Their ciabatta’s are mouth watering.

I’ve made it my personal project to try out all of the different kinds. Until now all the ciabatta’s I have tasted were great but one of my favourites must be the ‘Cortina’. This one is with mozzarella and salami. They give you a choice between ordinary salami and spicy salami. I’ve tried them both and like the spicy salami the best. But be aware because it really is very spicy. That combined with the creamy buffalo mozzarella is an absolute treat!

Another of my favourites is the ‘Feduzzi’. This ciabatta is filled with creamy mozzarella, grilled aubergine, and delicious pesto. Writing about it makes me hungry!

Besides ciabatta’s they also sell loads of different ready to eat food like cheeses, meats, pasta salads, and other things. Also the shop has a wall with shelves full of different sorts of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, dried and fresh pasta, coffee and all different kinds of wine.

Feduzzi’s is really worth a try. I’m sure you will not be disappointed!

I’ve discovered this place a short while a go and I must say I won’t have pizza anywhere else. The pizza they bake here is absolutely delicious.

La Perla is situated on a corner in the area called The Jordaan. The Jordaan is a great place for restaurants and bars. If you are looking for a nice place to eat you should definitely find it here. And if you by any chance feel like having pizza La Perla is the place to be!

The shop is quite small. There are a couple of seats at the window but you can also sit on one of the benches outside where you can enjoy your pizza while watching people walking and cycling by. The Jordaan seems to be an area full of interesting people so there is always something or somebody to see.

All the pizza’s are made freshly in front of you and baked in a wood fueled brick oven. This makes the thin pizza base nice and crispy. The ingredients are all imported from Italy and especially the buffalo mozzarella is extremely mouthwatering. As I said and as you can now probably imagine I really won’t go anywhere else to have pizza…

There’s not much to say about this spot except that it is the ideal place to get something to get a ‘broodje’ (dutch for sandwich or bread roll) with anything you can imagine!

You can choose the sandwich filling of your choice which can be a difficult choice to make. They have about all sorts of cheese and meats you can imagine and since they’re really not expensive its the ideal quick lunch.

My absolute favorite is the ‘vitello tonato’: veal, tuna salad, capers and tomatoes all on one roll. Delicious!

I never knew you were able to get good scones in Holland until I went to the Bakkerswinkel. Me and my friends met for lunch and started of having different kinds of savoury sandwiches which were all delicious. There is plenty of choice here and the ingredients used are tasty and fresh. The bread is nice and heavy so you are sure to be satisfied for the rest of the day after you get lunch here.

I have to admit that we were definitely satisfied, but we still couldn’t resist the temptation of ordering a scone as dessert. This was absolutely delicious. They have different kinds of scones, for instant with raisins, chocolate or cherries. They also have a wide range of different sorts of freshly made jam to go with it. Its really very good. And of course the clotted cream just makes it perfect!

This place really is the best! Broodje Bert is a great place for lunch, especially if you are suffering from a hangover. Famous (and my favourite) is the “Broodje Bert” sandwich, a large piece of Turkish bread with freshly grilled lamb meatballs. Besides the meat the bread is filled with lettuce, tomato, peppers, and lot of sauce. It takes a bit of work to get it down, but I always feel very satisfied after.

Besides the Broodje Bert they also serve several different sandwiches, burgers, and omelettes.

If you’ve had a rough night and you’re heading towards the city centre I would recommend you to give it a shot. There is no better way to start a (hung-over) day!

This is really the place to be for a great juicy burger. Forget about Mcdonalds or Burger King! This type of ‘slow fastfood’ is becoming more and more popular as this is not the only burgerbar of this kind in Amsterdam, but it`s definitely the best one.

You get to choose between different sizes of burgers, different kinds of bread, and all the toppings you could wish for. This does get a bit pricey if you don’t know when to stop so choose your toppings wisely. Yesterday I went all out and had a burger with avocado, blue cheese, onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes. This one was a bit too much but still really good.

Don’t come here for the atmosphere, as its quite brightly lit and the music isn’t that great either. But…. The burgers really are to die for. I promise!

Firma Pekelhaaring is one of my new favorites. I was first attracted by the place because of the interior, the tables and chairs are gorgeous, but I soon found out that they serve good food and wine too!

The menu consists of different sorts of fresh pasta which can be ordered in a small or big portion. I should say the raviolis are really excellent. There is also meat and fish to choose from. I always like to get a small pasta with one of the salads that are on the menu. This way I get a bit of everything! The winelist and the desserts are also really worth a try.

Pekelhaaring is open for lunch and dinner, the atmosphere is relaxed and I think quite metropolitan. During the day it’s also a great spot to do some work while drinking coffee. In the evening it can get really busy so its wise to make a reservation in advance!

Snack Bar Bird is on the busy Zeedijk, this is the China Town of Amsterdam. By far the best place to eat here is Snack bar Bird.

This tiny place serves the best Thai food one can imagine. Unfortunately the place is also very small and cramped, so often you have to wait outside before there is a table available. But luckily they are really quick so the wait is never too long. Sit at the window if you get the chance. You’ll see some interesting people…Once you’ve managed to squeeze yourself into a seat you wonder how you will ever get out. Don’t worry, you’ll manage.

I always have the beef in oyster sauce and I’ve never had it better than here! To get you started the spring rolls are delicious too. This is really the place for a quick bite that isn’t junk food. The portions are big and will keep you going for the rest of the evening.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed dinner there is also the option of Bird restaurant just across the street. It has the same owner as the snack bar, but it is a real restaurant with more tables and more space. For any group bigger then 4 people the restaurant is a better option than the snack bar. Unfortunately it does lack the snack bars atmosphere. So if it’s in any way possible, go for the snack bar!

In the Dapperstraat in the Eastern part of Amsterdam you will find the Dapper market. The Dapper market is one of my favourite markets. It is one of the busiest and biggest markets of Amsterdam.

The market sells a great diversity of food like fruit and vegetables. Besides food you will also find flowers, clothes, shoes and anything else you might need. I usually go there for flowers and fruit and vegetables and am always amazed at how cheap it is!

I also love the fact that at the market all different cultures come together to do their shopping. It is a really multicultural place and it represents Amsterdam really well. It is also worth it to check out the different shops just off the market where you will find little supermarkets that sell different foreign products. Also the market offers a diversity of different ready to eat snacks from lots of different cuisines. Another favourite of mine are the freshly squeezed fruit juices.

If you are planning to check out Amsterdam Oost, which I really recommend you do as it is a very lively area where lots of different cultures and kinds of people come together, you really can’t miss the Dapper Market.

I love burritos and usually make them myself. It has actually become one of my cooking specialties. So who would have thought that one day I would find a place where they make such tasty burritos that are maybe even better than my own!!??

The first time me and my friends visited the taco shop we didn’t know what to choose, we asked which burrito was the best and got served the smothered beef and beans burrito which was absolutely heavenly and a gigantic portion too. Guacamole, nacho’s, salad, a really nice red sauce on the side and to finish it off lots of melted cheese. Wow!! I love cheese but the other day I decided to try my favorite without the cheese and this was also great, and much healthier too…

You will find the Taco shop beside the Amstel river. There are a couple of places to sit but you can also take your food out. The small shop is owned by a very friendly guy who spends a lot of time in the shop. The other people working in the shop are also very friendly and the atmosphere is very relaxed and pleasant. I can’t get enough!

I love Surinamese food. At least once a week me and my friends have to eat at one of our favorite spots. At the moment this is Warung Mini. You will find this little restaurant in the Pijp. An area which is known for the huge amount of little Surinamese toko’s. It is hard to say which one is best. They each have their own specialties so I just visit them all, but start with this one please!

I go to Warung Mini for their delicious saoto soup, ‘broodje pom’, roti, and fritta. You should definitely give these ones a try. The restaurant is small but has quite a lot of seats and it has a good enough atmosphere to sit down and enjoy your meal.

When you’re visiting Amsterdam you really cannot leave before you’ve tried some Surinamese food. I hope you will like it as much as I do!!

In the middle of ‘The Pijp’ you will find Warung Marlon, a little Surinamese restaurant. There are lots of places like this in Amsterdam, and especially a lot in ‘The Pijp’. The menus are usually quite similar in the different restaurants but still they all differ slightly. I suppose it all depends on your personal taste which one you find the best.

Marlon doesn’t really have a lot of atmosphere but it’s ideal for a quick meal or a take-away. I think you should really try Surinamese food when visiting Amsterdam, as it really is a fantastic part of the Dutch culture

Don’t go to Marlon without trying the delicious Bakabana (deepfried banana with satay sauce)!

This spot comes closest to what Americans consider a deli… and a fine one it is. It has a good selection of different delicacies, varying from salads to ready-made fine foods. It also has a nice choice of cheeses and sausages.

One of the things I really yearn for from time to time is their lasagna. For €1.50 per 100 gram you can choose between salmon-spinach, bolognese or pumpkin-goat cheese (the first one is my absolute favourite). Furthermore they have two types of burritos (chicken or minced meat; €4.50 each) and two or three different types of quiches (€1.60 per 100 gram).

You’ll also find (biological) fruit juices, soups, vegetables etc. Whatever you’ll find at your deli back home. So whenever you’re (a) lazy (cook) and have some extra bucks to spend, you can find your supper here.

Started about two years ago by a young entrepeneur ,you’ll find this lunch spot on the leeward side of the Singel, between Koningsplein and Muntplein (on the rear side of the Bloemenmarkt). The place uses only fresh, biological products for their sandwiches, wraps, smoothies and lemonades. My favorites are the wrap with salmon and the homemade lemonade. There are also (two different) soups, a couple of salads and on Thursday a special hot meal on the menu.

Furthermore they serve decent coffee and tea (fairtrade) and their cakes are definitely worth a try (especially the carrot cake). They have a good WIFI connection, which makes it ideal for those who’ll have to finish some business while consuming their lunch. In Spring and Summer you can enjoy the sun on a little terrace. Too bad that from 16:00 on the street in front of it gets jammed by cars and trucks. But until that time it’s a great observation post for watching people passing by.

One minor remark: it’s sometimes a bit difficult to get the staff’s attention (except from my favourite waitress on Thursday), for they are very talkative to the regulars (mostly friends of the staff/owner). For the rest it’s a good place to enjoy a delicious and ‘fair’ lunch.

Since this place is a little tucked away in a neighborhood in Oost, you could easily miss it. But you should not miss it, since this is a really cute and good brunch and lunch spot! Their motto is: stop eating shit, eat good food!

The products they use are mostly organic or honest, which you can taste. They have an extensive menu, with sandwiches served on slices of bread, fresh smoothies, soups, homemade carrot cake and my favorite chai tea’s.

Beter en Leuk means Better and Pleasant, and the atmosphere in this place is very relaxed with little benches in- and outside with comfortable pillows. Next to being a lunch spot it is also a small boutique, where you could find organic beauty essentials, clothes and gadgets. The high tea I can also recommend! And for the ladies; once in a while they offer workshops or special shopping evenings. So if you want to try something new, and you are in Oost give it a try!

If you don’t feel like going for some drinks to the city centre, try Zola in West. Here they serve some nice sandwiches for a good lunch when you drop by after checking out the shopping street ‘Kinkerstraat’ and the ‘Ten Kate market’.

When the weather allows it is very comfortable at the terrace which is conveniently situated to the waterside. The furniture inside looks fresh with the wood and typical light purple color on the walls.

Dinner is pure and simple, I like to go for one of the salads or the spicy Thai fish cakes. They serve some good cocktails at the bar and on Friday night you can enjoy yourself till late with the special night: Drink & Dance. It could get pretty busy on the Friday nights. 

When it gets busy the service can be a bit chaotic, but other than that this place is an all-rounder, its suitable for pre-dinner or after work drinks, lunch and dinner!

I discovered this place about a year ago ‘thanks’ to the GVB (transport company), when there was once again a big pile-up of metro’s in the tunnel near Waterlooplein (it happens frequently). Around noon I was heading towards the city centre when they asked everyone to leave the subway at Weesperplein. Because I skipped breakfast that morning I first wanted to grab a sandwich somewhere before looking for alternative transportation. From that moment on it’s one of the spots I’ll go for a quick sandwich whenever I forgot to eat breakfast again.

For a reasonable price (from €1,80 on) you can get a simple but okay sandwich. You can choose between brown, white or multigrain rolls, French baguettes or Italian buns (the latter two cost a bit more). As filling you have a wide selection of choices, from egg till smoked sausage or sliced meat-ball. For the sweet-teeth among us there are cookies, brownies, muffins and Indonesian ‘thousand-layer’ cake (we call it spekkoek in Dutch, try it out) available. For a shot of caffeine you can get coffee or tea for only €1,00 (watch out, this is not the premium quality stuff) and you can buy a copy of your newsletter when you forgot to bring yours.

If you’re in a hurry, you’re wallet doesn’t allow much luxury and you’re near Weesperplein, Convenience-to-go is the place to go!

There are many bagel bars in Amsterdam. The most famous one is of course  Bagels & Beans, a huge chain in Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands. But bigger is not always better… and Tony’s NY City Bagels is proof of this.

Tony’s probably the first bagel bar in Amsterdam, or the first of its kind. It’s located near Waterlooplein at the Jodenbreestraat (near the big Albert Heijn), where it has been for more than 15 years. The owner once told me that he wanted to create a lunchroom similar to those you find on the streets of New York (hence the name). If he succeeded is not the question, at least not to me. Tony’s just happens to be the best bagel place in Amsterdam, because it has all the right ingredients.

The bagels are delicious, the coffee is tasty and the muffins are among the best in the city. The staff is friendly, the ambience is great and fortunately not as noisy as at some of the branches of the chain mentioned above. I often find myself chatting with other customers, while normally I just like to read my newspaper.

For me Tony’s is a better version of many of the other bagel bars in the city, just because it focussed on the little things. Once again, bigger is not always better!

How far would you travel for the tastiest chips (as in French fries) of Amsterdam? I know I’m not talking haute cuisine here, but I hope you’ll take this next endeavor during your stay at least once (especially for those who stay for a longer period). From all the snackbars in the city claiming they make the best chips, this is the only one which really deserves this title!

This place is located at the far eastern side of Zeeburg (close to IJburg). If you expect to come across a warm diner, where you can enjoy your meal in all comfortableness, think again:this provisional shed, without any real walls, is made out of containers, canvas, wood and other discarded building materials. Located at the edge of an industrial park and opposite a former asylum centre, the scene of desolation is complete.

Did I startle you enough by now? Good!

Now, what makes this endeavor worth it are the perfect golden yellow chips they serve. Nothing like the totally oil-soaked matchsticks they dare to call chips at many other places. These babies are freshly cut and pre-baked every single day. The chips are baked in a way that they contain the right amount of crunchiness, but still have this perfect potatoe taste.

You might find it a bit excessive to travel there only for some chips and a ‘kroket’. Then consider snackbar Eiburgh being an excellent starting or endpoint for a tour. From here you can for example bike alongside the banks of the IJmeer to Volendam.

The Albert Cuyp market is the most famous market of Amsterdam. Sadly that’s noticeable when you look at the prices and assortment which have been adjusted to ‘tourist standards’. But in front of this oriental restaurant called Bazar, a sweet sugary smell will definitely tickle your nostrils. Do check out where this comes from, cause it will be a select opportunity to taste one of Holland’s most delicious and well-known sweets.

For more than forty years at this same old spot at the market a family run business has made the original stroopwafel (treacle wafer) based on their won ‘secret’ recipe. And boy, their creations are devine. In a small trailer the waffles are freshly baked under a special waffle-iron, spread with syrup and than put together, making a bigger specimen than you’ll find in any supermarket or anywhere else (and yes, in this case size does matter). Throughout the years and through wind and rain, first the farher and nowadays the son, provides whoever is in need of a shot of sweetness.

And guys, if you wanna buy your mother/girlfriend a nice souvenir from your stay in Amsterdam, you can get a package of already prepared waffles in a Delft blue gift-wrapping. The perfect gift for your loved-ones (after one bite they will definitely forgive you all these sins you probable committed during your stay).

At the corner of the Albert Cuypstraat and the Eerste van der Helststraat you’ll find this cosy tavern with terrace all year and very friendly (and often cute) staff. The place is popular among people from all walks of life, which gives it this remarkably pleasant ambiance.

The music is mostly a bit jazzy, but can become more pop orientated in the evenings, when the crowd gets more distinctive. In the weekends and on sunny days it can be terrible crowded with people taking a break from strolling the Albert Cuyp market.

I especially like to come here for lunch or a coffee in the afternoon. Their menu isn’t very extensive, but they serve some nice sandwiches made on ciabattas. The toasted sandwich with goat cheese (see picture) is especially one of my favourites. Their homemade apple pie is also noteworthy, as it has a nice crunchy shell. In the evenings you can enjoy a decent bite for a good price (nothing fancy, though). Here also not a big selection of dishes (only four or five) which makes it not the kind of place where you wanna go with difficult eaters. A small but fine ‘borrel’ menu completes the things they offer.

One little complaint about the place: they should upgrade their offering a bit, especially the beer menu. If you come here often you might get a little bored by the few options. A place like this definitely deserves more..
