Amsterdam’s cultural pride and joy is without a doubt the Royal Theater Carré. Situated on the beautiful Amstel canal, this theater dates back to 1887 and was designed to host circuses. I was so surprised to see that this amazing theater isn’t mentioned in most travel books. The building is beautiful from the outside but if you’re able to come and see a show then be amazed by the even more beautiful interior.
Nowadays they host everything from cabaret to theater, concerts & musicals. I have always loved coming here to see a show, but watching the actual circus at Carre makes it extra special. We have a family tradition of coming here each year when there’s two weeks of World Christmas Circus. The best circus artists from all over the world come here to perform, it’s absolutely incredible.
Tip: Want to combine a show with a nice dinner? Next to the theater is a restaurant called the Carre kelder. There’s a great ambience and they make sure that you’ve finished your meal just in time for the show!
