De Leeuw Zuurwaren is one of the oldest businesses in Amsterdam. They make their pickles by traditional Jewish recipe since 1850. After starting with peddling only (with the city divided in areas, each area ‘belonging’ to a certain family), they then opened the shop due to the busy streets. Just like in the old days, the shop is opened on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays only.
The pickles made by De Leeuw are still seen as some of the best of the entire country. People drive all the way to Amsterdam just for their range of pickles. On the side, the shop also sells other delicacies, including home flavoured olives. I used to work nearby, but although we moved, I still stop by the shop every now and then to get some of their pickles.
If you have the chance to drop by De Leeuw, make sure you do. This is a really old Amsterdam institute and their products are simply amazing.
