Eating out can be quite expensive in Amsterdam. Unfortunately in most cases we are left with the choice of “dining out” or rushing through a snack-bar. It’s champagne or Frizzantino, nothing in between. Until now.
Now we have the Stadskantine, a concept that offers a real meal for under € 10. Well, eating out in other European cities can be even cheaper, but for Amsterdam € 8.85 (the cost of the meal) is exactly half of the price you would pay for an average meal in another average restaurant.
Three dishes, one vegetarian, one with meat and one with fish, each day a new treat. If you are not picky, what more do you need: a creative variation of a typical Dutch meal (last time I had mashed potatoes with smoked salmon and salad) in a young – appealing canteen-style environment. The interior is functional, with long wooden (shared) tables, and it has a nice open atmosphere.
So, if you are too lazy to cook yourself, and you have already eaten enough french fries, burgers, pizza slices and croquettes to last you a decade, you should consider checking out the Stadskantine. It’s better for your health and you will have a more solid foundation for your next dive into Amsterdam’s nightlife.
Check their website for the daily menu! Example dish: Thai red curry with beef cod, or penne with blue cheese.
Keep in mind though that they only accept card payment – no cash!
