Eating out can be quite expensive in Amsterdam. Unfortunately in most cases we are left with the choice of “dining out” or rushing through a snack-bar. It’s champagne or Frizzantino, nothing in between. Until now.
Now we have the Stadskantine, a concept that offers a real meal for under € 10. Well, eating out in other European cities can be even cheaper, but for Amsterdam € 8.85 (the cost of the meal) is exactly half of the price that you would pay for an average meal in another average restaurant.
So, what’s the catch? The catch is that there is not so much to choose from. Three dishes, one vegetarian, one with meat and one with fish. If you are not picky, what more do you need: a creative variation on a typical dutch meal (last time I had mashed potatoes with smoked salmon and salad) in a young – appealing canteen-style environment. The interior is functional, with long wooden (shared) tables, and it has a nice open atmosphere.
So, if you are too lazy to cook yourself, and you have already eaten your french fries, burgers, pizza slices and croquettes for the last decade, you should consider checking out the Stadskantine. It’s better for your health and you will have a more solid foundation for your next dive into Amsterdam nightlife.
In the meantime De Stadskantine is also open for breakfast – which is also not too common in Amsterdam.
Keep in mind though that they only accept card payment – no cash!
