On Java island there is a small ferry (the Oostveerpont) that goes to the outskirts of the Northern industrial area. As the boat slowly crosses the water you will see factories and warehouses closing in on you. That means you’re getting near one of the coolest cinema’s in the North, FC Hyena – even the trip to get there is something special.
Aside from an art house-oriented film programme, FC Hyena serves phenomenal food. More than once I’ve ordered a table full of their small courses and never even made it to see the movie. As the view overlooking the water is quite a sight, your eyes will get a VIP treatment anyway, just by looking out the window.
On Tuesdays FC Hyena presents Hyena Docs, where you can see a selection of documentaries from all over the world, sometimes with a short introductory talk or interview where it’s possible to actually ask questions and converse with the makers. Check out the website for the programme — and a little tip: do pay attention to the language and subtitles!
