Fancy a proper glass of wine, without the pretentious vibe present in a lot of wine bars? Go to Glou Glou. When entering Glou Glou it feels like you’ve walked into both a cosy French bistro and a comfy rural pub at once. Yet, they serve great natural wines – so-called ‘vins naturel’ – right in the middle of Amsterdam.
Glou Glou is a cute, slightly hidden spot perfectly right for a romantic night out or a quality heads-up with an old friend. Make sure to order their spot-on rillettes (made by De Pasteibakkerij) and don’t hesitate to ask for advice on which wine to choose. All of the staff know everything about their extensive menu, and are keen to help you make the right choice (after you’ve tried a sip or two). Oh, and they serve lunch on Fridays and weekends as well.
Fun fact: I once had a great, great wine at a restaurant somewhere in Amsterdam, wrote down its name, lost the paper and then discovered it again at Glou Glou over 2 years later. The good news? They sell their wines from a small shop behind the bar; I keep some bottles of the wine ever since.
