Graceland – Bar-b-q and Americana

Graceland, an all American, MEAT restaurant with the appropriate southern roots rock style. It has a rough interior, more like “plasterwork coming off the wall”, with rough wooden benches, and is one part American diner, one part barbecue joint.

Associative thinkers would scream: “campfire!”, and somewhere, either in reality, or some hidden corners of your brain you’d hear a harmonica, and a Jew’s harp. But no – in reality it’s the grizzly blues riffs of Scottish band Fan Rail (picture) that took me out on this Sunday afternoon. It’s my friend Paul van Dijk, a connecting point for local musicians (not the famous DJ), who organizes the Sunday afternoon events.

Ribs and pulled pork are the specialties here, no steaks, no t-bones, no rib-eyes. Rural, poor man’s dishes, corn and beans and bacon and potatoes. Food for cowboys. And the swamp diggers of the Southern marshes.

And the music matches the food. Blues, rock, bluegrass, you name it. And, of course, a portrait of king Elvis somewhere, if it wasn’t a tattoo on one of the guests’ back. It wouldn’t surprise me.

Graceland is located on some rare no-man’s-land spot between two neighborhoods, next to the Food Plaza – the wholesale market for Amsterdam food entrepreneurs. Even still – if it’s not for a Sunday afternoon and you’re planning to go for dinner, even throughout the week, it’s recommended to make a reservation first. Graceland is becoming popular.
