Hannekes Boom – Chill out @ pirates bay

Hannekes Boom has been part of a city development plan, with the idea to transform a dark and inevitably unsafe spot in the city center into a social meeting point. The concept of Hannekes Boom obviously convinced the city planners: a low-key “gezellig” (cosy, sociable) place to enjoy organic food, have beer and coffee, and gather around the large iron stove when it’s cold outside. The tree (of Hanneke – Hannekes Boom) is in fact not the only one, and after a day of shopping or spent at the library (fantastic place with a very nice view as well) next door, it’s a good spot to calm down and relax outside.

The summer offers a beer garden, and a quay wall to sit “on top of the bay”, while for worse weather conditions you’ll be fine inside, enjoying the warmth of the stove. From here you have a nice view on the old Amsterdam harbor, where you can enjoy a cold beer, staring at the sea – well, the old harbor then. Boats sometimes dock at Hannekes Boom, and there is enough beautiful scenery (and people) around to make you feel like you’re at the right place…

Hannekes Boom has a menu of organic food, live music about two times a week (check the agenda on their website), that outdoor feeling around that wooden cabin that Hannekes Boom actually is – and all that so close to the overcrowded Damrak and central station. If only those tourists knew – but luckily they don’t.
