On the old factory grounds of the Westergasfabriek is one of my favourite cinema’s, Het Ketelhuis. Although this cinema is located in a large industrial building, they made the bar a very cozy and easy-going place. There are several beers to choose from, there are small snacks to get, and of course there are movies. The programming of Het Ketelhuis has an emphasis on Dutch film, World Cinema and Art House. There are German and French movie nights on a regular basis.
What I like most about the things that go on in Het Ketelhuis are the surprising and creative side programmes that exist next to their regular film schedule. With themes like Fashion Films (made by the students of the Amsterdam Fashion Academy) or ‘Buurtbios’ (films about the neighbourhood) they shine a light on films you will probably not see in other cinemas. Also, and this can’t be left unsaid, Het Ketelhuis has great cakes.
