Ranked in the top 15 bookstores in the Netherlands, Het Martyrium is a classic bookstore. I can spend hours and hours here, lost in time. So much to read and desperate to take home with me.
Bookcases with modern literature at bargain prices, shelves with a vast collection of DVDs, art house, documentaries and TV series welcome me when I enter this wonder-world, this man made heaven.
The temptation has already begun and it is a miracle when I leave Het Martyrium empty-handed. For an avid reader that is the biggest challenge, to leave the store empty-handed. I never succeed in this, I must admit.
Spacious, serene silence and intimate atmosphere, high level service by the fine and friendly staff that know what they are talking about. Their personal recommendations are on display.
Bookshelves packed with Dutch, English, German and French literature! Apart from all the literature that is on display, Het Martyrium offers far more. Strolling through the store one notes there is an impressive range of discount books on art, design and history, publishers remnants of English or American origin, self-imported, so Marieke, Dirk and Trees know what they are selling. It’s one of their specialties and what they are known for.
And there is more, plenty more to keep you here for some extra hours. The sections poetry, philosophy, (Dutch) history, politics, management, psychology, cooking & wine are well sorted. So when you have the time, spend some time here, you’ll enjoy it! And you’ll probably bump into me.
