Singel 404 is one of my old time favorites. It’s a great place for breakfast or lunch mainly because you have loads of choice and in general everything on the menu is fresh and very affordable. They have lots of different kinds of bread and almost every filling you can think of.
Because there is so much to choose from I often get confused and just stick to my favorite: warm goat cheese and chicken. But obviously it is best to just try loads of different things! Besides sandwiches you can also order soups and salads. And of course a wide range of shakes, fruit juices, coffees, or even a glass of wine!
Because Singel 404 is very close to the University of Amsterdam it gets very busy, lots of (female) students take a long lunchbreak here and catch up with their friends. So be prepared to wait a while before you get your table.

It is a nice place to have lunch, I agree.. but among other places in the vicinity (Wolvenstraat, Homemade). One remark is that the place can be pretty noisy and busy, especially when people are standing in line for a table. Often they stand in the aisle right next to your table, talking loudly, blocking the passage for the employees. I know it’s difficult for a restaurant to handle such situations, but for me it’s often the reason to go to one of the other places.
Gisela basically summed up it all up… I just wanted to emphasize what a great place this is. In addition to the great sandwiches, the staff is terrific; even at busy hrs. If you’re lucky they even give you some free homemade apple pie…
