A former canal, nowadays filled with cars and home to some great restaurants and bars turns into a lively market on Saturdays. Starting at 09:00 and lasting until around 16:00 this market is home to everything you need.
I usually visit at around 10:00. when it’s not that crowded, the flowers are still fresh and everything is in stock. I start out in the middle and head towards the Marnixstraat first. This side is where I buy my fruit & vegetables at Wim & Lidy’s stand on the corner of the Lindengracht and the Lindenstraat. Across the intersection I take a peek at the clothes that Rene & Marjan are selling and approaching the end I stock up on olives and hummus at an fantastic Arab stand! Turning around I walk towards the Brouwersgracht picking up some nice flowers and hunting the stalls for new shoes. Finally I head for Gotjé where you can buy all kinds of nuts & dried fruits. Apart from the above the market also sells bicycle equipment, ‘stroopwafels’, fish, pantyhose and so on … When the weather is good or when I run into someone on the market I like to grab a cup of coffee at Mamma Rosetta and watch all the people go by dragging their bags along. The perfect start of my Saturday!
Tip: can’t get enough of strolling around markets? Every Saturday there’s also a great marketplace nearby at the Noordenmarkt which specialises in antiques, vintage clothes and biological products.
