The Movies on the famous Haarlemmerdijk is the oldest movie theatre in Amsterdam that’s still at work. Dating back from 1912, this cinema has kept its original Art Deco style which makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time! Be aware that lines can be quite long with just one cash register but it’s all worth the waiting.
Here at The Movies they like to present themselves as an art house cinema with a lot of cool pictures showing, but occasionally they display a Hollywood blockbuster too. The tickets are fairly well priced comparing to other movie theaters and they have a student discount.
I love to come here to watch a movie not only because I don’t like the major corporate movie theaters but also because this theatre has a family feel to it. Looking at all the kids I see myself as a little girl coming here with my parents to see a Disney movie, makes me nostalgic! Another thing I love is the fact that the cinemas are small and the chairs are super comfortable (make sure you don’t accidentally fall asleep!). Plus they have delicious popcorn, a must for every self respecting cinema.
Tip: you can also grab a bite to eat at the restaurant inside the theatre. They have deals combining a ticket and for instant a main course plus dessert. It’s not that cheap but the food’s great!
