Cafe Restaurant Van Kerkwijk is located within walking distance from Dam Square in a narrow street called Nes. From the buzzing Dam Square full of traffic and people, walking into the Nes is like entering a different world. Such is the perfect setting for Van Kerkwijk that fits very well in this street.
Van Kerkwijk can be characterized as very relaxed, no rush, easy going with regular customers and some young entrepreneurs who work next door and other people who made their way inside. I instantly feel at ease here and each time I am curious about what’s on the daily menu.
The Sisters Van Kerkwijk who run this place have chosen for a personal approach. The service is outstanding. No ordinary menu card here. Instead the Sisters have chosen to share the menu with me at the table. A homemade variety of cakes, pies, soups, salads, all fresh, daily made. I always find it difficult to make a choice. A salad or a soup, or both… I can recommend the Italian tomato soup if it’s on the menu. And the apple pie! Food and drinks are of very good quality with fair prices, so there are no surprises when I ask for the bill.
Open from 11:00 – 01:00, Van Kerkwijk is the place for me to go for a brunch on a lazy Saturday or Sunday morning with a pack of newspapers, a varied lunch, drinks in the afternoon, or a fine dinner with good wines. Reservations are not necessary.
