Amsterdam South-East (Zuidoost) is an area that is often overlooked by visitors, but if you have the time, it’s definitely worth a visit. It has some great hidden gems with amazing food, and it’s less than a 30-minute journey from the centre of town.
One of my favourite spots is World of Food, where Amsterdam’s many cultures and cuisines have come together and are well represented. Located in a renovated garage, this street food concept has 25 vendors serving food and drinks from all over the world. African, Caribbean, Indian, Indonesian and Middle-Eastern, just to name a few. Walk around, look at the menus, and don’t be afraid to try a little of everything. The set-up makes it ideal to try lots of food from different corners of the world, and there’s always something to suit everyone’s taste. Once you’ve got your food, grab a table and enjoy!
Because you might be overwhelmed with choice at first, here are my personal tried and tested favourites:
Vle’s Keuken (Surinamese) – great BBQ ribs and chicken wings
Yvettes Kitchen (Caribbean) – The best johnny cake in town! Get it filled with cheese or saltfish (just trust me on this one)
Stick up (Indonesian) – Beef rendang to die for, and also some good vegetarian options
Hi Lo Rotishop (Surinamese/Indian) – for all your roti and bara cravings.
