'T Bieke Antwerp (by Tinneke Voet)

when I go shopping at ‘Wilde Zee’, I have to get an ice cream from Bieke (summer, winter, it doesn’t matter!).

Hallelujah, you won’t believe how good this tastes. They make everything fresh, all year long. My favourite is the banana taste!

And when you don’t feel like eating ice cream, have a waffle… they’re yummy too!

Achter de Maan Antwerp (by Ysabel Jongeneelen)

In the Hoogstraat (close to the Zwarte Panter, check the Zwarte Panter article) there is a little shop called ‘Achter de Maan’ (Behind the Moon).

It is not so easy to tell what they are selling, but it is always fun. They have a lot of design things, and a lot of toys. One of the characteristics is that almost all objects are funny. They make me smile. There are original umbrella’s (in the shape of little persons), bags, funny kitchen stuff and Japanese toys. The sell similar things to Akotee (check the Akotee article) on the Melkmarkt, but yet they have their own style. In Dutch we call the things they sell ‘hebbedingetjes’: little things you want to have, but that are mostly not needed.

What I don’t like is that they sell a lot of plastic and that it is a little bit too expensive. But is is really a great shop to find the perfect present. For somebody else or for yourself.

Akotee Antwerp (by Tanguy Ottomer)

This extremely colorful sweet shop next to the cathedral is one of the funniest in its kind.

Special clocks, crazy postcards, music boxes, books, lamps or bags for your bike: they have it all.

Go in and you don’t know where to look first. It feels like Christmas all year long, even now in the summer!

In Belgium we need an umbrella like Hawaiian people need flowers around their neck.  You can find very colorful and cute umbrella’s right here.  To brighten up your rainy days…

They have the special and very successful brand ‘Kitch Kitchen’. They have all kinds of bags for bikes, in a red-yellow-purple-green… You name it, they have it!

American Apparel is an american brand (not very hard to figure that one out :-) ). They sell clean clothes (in the meaning of: made in the US and not China!) in a clean environment. Doesn’t sound very exciting you think? Guess again… when you enter the shop, you just have to stand still and let it all come to you… tops, t’s, sweaters, leggings…. in every color you can think of! They even sell dancing clothes…

I often go there to buy simple sweaters and t-shirts, but i also go there when i have a Theme-party… In a few weeks, i have a party: 80’s-ski outfit! So i went to American apparel to buy myself a fluo dancing top to wear under my ski-pants…and fluo leg warmers and a fluo thing to put on my head! lovely! let the party begin!

Just visit the shop to buy some good basics or have a great time laughing with all the silly stuff you also find there!

APC Antwerp (by Tinneke Voet)

The French brand APC is not very well known in Belgium, but very popular in France.

The shop in Antwerp is a very small shop, but it has all you need. Men’s and women’s clothes, shoes, bags,… all very basic but oooh so nice, and very easy to combine with other stuff. My boyfriend often buys sweaters there, and they always have wonderful boots! Three years ago (2007) I bought some boots here, and I still use them almost every day!

They often have some sales in the back of the shop (always handy!). And at the cash register, you find candy called ‘een koffiebolleke’ from Roodthooft… it’s a very famous ‘bolleke’ made in Antwerp (and I’m addicted to them).

Caffènation Antwerp (by Ysabel Jongeneelen)

Since 2003 Antwerp has a super popular coffee bar very close to the Meir, our little shopping paradise… Caffénation is a bit hidden, but that doesn’t mean it is not noticed. It’s a small place where coffee is the sacred wonder thing. The owner is in love with coffee (they say he even attends coffee tastings). They sell a lot of original coffees with a creative touch. If you want a latte art, caffè machiato, single blend ristretto, decaf soy cappuccino or iced vanilla latte; they have it. They also have soy milk. And they don’t forget tea lovers and chocolate lovers. They sell for example a drink with Maltezers.

You can drink your coffee in a sofa or at a big table with a newspaper or a magazine. When you leave you can also buy some coffee. A talk with the owner makes you believe it is not possible to survive without coffee.

I love to come there. It has everything a what a coffee lover like me wants. But I’m not the only one that likes it there. There’s also the rest of Antwerp. It’s a great place for a quick meeting with a friend, for a little pause after shopping. I never stay long. It is one of the very hot spots in town and sometimes that’s a pity…

Carolus Borromeus Church Antwerp (by NIko Caignie)

This magnificent Church was built between 1615 & 1621. The Hendrik Conscience Square faces this church. It just overwhelms you: the size, the details, the facade…

This church was built with paintings, architecture and sculptures designed by Pieter Paul Rubens. Although this is a very big church it’s not that easy to spot in the skyline of Antwerp. It’s a bit covered by more modern and bigger buildings. But once you arrive on the square you will understand the uniqueness of this “hidden” church.

The square in front of the church is very relaxing as well. Usually a lonesome violin player is playing his instrument, bringing a calm, relaxing atmosphere over the area, and that only adds to the “grandeur” of the church.

City Hall Antwerp (by Niko Caignie)

One of the city’s proud is city hall. This renaissance building is a part of the Unesco heritage. In Antwerp we reffer to it as – ‘t schoon verdiep – (the beautiful floor) referring to the beautiful first floor. This is where the mayor of Antwerp has his office. All official city receptions are held here as well like weddings etc.

In front of the city hall you’ll see the statue of Antigone trowing away a hand from where Antwerp got its name. Hand Werpen (Trowing hands) –> Antwerpen

Antigone guarded the city port, boatsmen who refused to pay taxes got their hand cut. The hand was then tossed in the river Schelde.

This very posh area doesn’t stroke with the atmosphere inside or on the terrace.  It has a no-nonsense feeling and you get your coffee with a filter.

Episode Antwerp (by Tinneke Voet)

Theme parties are very trendy to organise lately. So whenever I have a party, I go to Episode… It’s a second hand shop and you can find anything there.

These are the themes I shopped for at Episode:

- Lumberjack Party
- After Ski Party
- Keeping Up Appearances (Hyacinth and Onslow!)
- Totally Wrong 80’s Party
- Fluo ‘this is the sound of C’ party (New Beat!)
- 90’s Party

And believe me, my outfit always was very successful!

Just go check it out, have a laugh or find something really nice (when you search good, you can also find things you can wear without going to a theme party :-) )

Fans Antwerp (by Ysabel Jongeneelen)

Even when you’re not a metal or Gothic or a punk-fan, there’s a shop in the Kammenstraat in Antwerp that is great fun and worth a visit. ‘Fans’ is a clothing shop for Gothics and vampires, and other subcultures and species… You can almost permanently find youngsters with extreme black clothing in this strange shop that has opened the seventies.

The owners of the Fans faced a lot of difficulties and lawsuits over the years because the neighbors considered them dangerous and provocative. But the people that come here may look dangerous, they are often insecure and mostly very nice. When I spoke to the owner last week, he told me: ‘We only get bloodthirsty after closing time…’ I thought this was very funny. In September they wrote `Black to School…’ on the windows.

I used to be afraid to go inside, but since a while I go there sometimes and wander around in the very little shop. It is a lot of fun. They sell the strangest things. I got me a ‘Giant Microbe’ – they’re like teddy bear microbes. I got “the flu”. They also sell coffin-shaped wallets, and of course a lot of clothes. Some are really wearable for ‘outsiders’.

This shop is an icon in Antwerp; almost everybody knows ‘the Fans’ and it is a part of this city. They say it’s a gate to the Underworld, but it is also an interesting place with interesting objects…

Friday Market Antwerp (by Ysabel Jongeneelen)

When you are in Antwerp on a Friday morning, it is something you really have to see: the strange and famous ‘Vrijdagse Markt’. Go there!

It’s great and it’s so typically Antwerp. It’s a little adventure on a Friday morning. It’s a second hand market but what it makes different is the way of selling: it ’s an auction, they talk really ‘aantwaarps’ and sometimes you think they will be fighting soon because people get all incited.

They mostly sell furniture and bicycles but it is incredible what else you can buy there: a box with toothbrushes made in 1963, a complete correspondence between a mother and a son over twenty years, a broken toaster, dirty teddy bears, etc. Sometimes it is real rubbish and sometimes it is a treasure. A lot of the things come from old people that died, shops that went bankrupt.

It starts at nine in the morning and it finishes at one o’clock in the afternoon. The garbage car comes between one and two and cleans the whole square. And that’s necessary. All the things that nobody wanted are left behind.

I don’t know how long it already exists, but I guess it was always there. I’m mostly working on a Friday morning and i don’t go there often, but when I have the chance i don’t want to miss it, this special market, so lively, so energetic.

And maybe nice to know: the museum of Plantijn en Moretus is on the same square…

Il Gallo Nero Antwerp (by Niko Caignie)

This is absolutely my new favorite in Antwerp! It’s not known by many people but a real treasure to cherish. Il Gallo Nero is an Italian restaurant owned by a Belgian – Italian couple. It’s Italian, but the Italian man handles the service, his wife takes care of the excellent dishes. You ‘ll find some great Italian dishes here with a touch of Belgian influences. The food is of great quality here.

What adds more to the charm is the nice man who serves you. He’s Milanese born and only speaks french & Italian (fluently). He explains everything he serves in a way only an Italian can. The food, the people: honest, nice and excellent quality.

And while you are there, take a moment to enjoy the nice scenery you’ve entered. Some nice paintings and some traditional Italian kitsch…this all served with carefully selected music by Italian crooners.

I tell you… if you only have one restaurant opportunity in Antwerp, this should be it. Cozy, romantic, …

K. Zeppos Antwerp (by Ysabel Jongeneelen)

I often come in the café/restaurant K. Zeppos. The name comes from a Belgian tv-programme for kids: Kapitein Zeppos. It played in the years 1964 till 1968 and was very successful.

When you enter the café you see a very big picture of the actor that played Kapitein Zeppos (Senne Rouffaer).

K. Zeppos is a very ‘practical’ café/restaurant. It’s in the middle of the city, but not in the heat of the tourist-zone. It has an enormous terrace on a big square in summer and in winter it is very comfortable inside. Good atmosphere, nice food for an okay price. It’s not cheap, but also not very expensive. Only their tea is way too expensive. That’s why I never drink tea in the K. Zeppos.

It’s a perfect meeting-place for little groups. If I want to see a bunch of my friends we think easily of K.Zeppos. Especially if some people have to eat. You can eat classic Belgian food, but they have also meals from all over the world. It’s a good place where I like to come from time to time…

Live To Ride Antwerp (by BMX by Niko Caignie)

Not so long ago I was a passionate skateboarder, but then real life, body weight and other stuff kicked in. So my favorite sport got a bit behind… but that doesn’t stop me from visiting the skate-parks I used to hang out.

So if you are enjoying a stroll in the Antwerp City park make sure you make a stop at the north side of the park where a fine skate-park is located. Take a sit next to the ground and watch a variety of skaters an BMX’ers showing of their skills. It’s worth a little stop, especially if you’re into this kind of sports.

Monte Cristo Antwerp (by Dulce Alvarez)

Despite of what some people might think about Antwerp inhabitants, we do not only shop and eat… we also drink coffee! Not so long ago I thought the only way to have a home-like-coffee-drinking-experience did not exist, but it actually does.

The place resembles a big living room with comfy couches, nice decoration with a great atmosphere. This is indeed one of the few places in Antwerp where different generations and backgrounds drink together in harmony: babies with their mothers and grandparents, people in their twenties, in their thirties, Belgian, British, Dutch… this is actually a great place to network.

The specialty of the house is the ‘Antwerpse coffee’ prepared with one of the most typical Antwerpian spirits: Elixir d’Anvers.  The Coffee of the Month’ in February is a mix of almond liquor and speculaas spice.

No doubt this is one of my favorite places in the whole country not only because the coffee is great, original, and versatile, but because my man (one of the most

anti-coffee-persons) actually enjoys having a drink of coffee. I think I finally converted him.

Nottebohm Library Antwerp (by Niko Caignie)

Antwerp hosts many libraries, some of them practical, some big, some renown and some of them are not accessible for public visits. The Nottebohm Library is one of those closed libraries. Only once or twice a year the public is allowed to have a peek at its rich and beautiful content.

Today i was lucky to enter the library and view it in his full glory. I was amazed by the massive old books stored there (over 35 km if placed next to each other) and this all in a great historic room. It opens occasionally – check the website for opening weekends. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Step by Step Antwerp (by Tinneke Voet)

Next to APC (check the APC article) you find Step by Step, and when you enter Step by Step after visiting APC, it feels like you are in Paris in stead of Antwerp. A set of Barbie dolls welcomes you before you walk in the Walhalla of French Brands. You can find Vanessa Bruno, Isabel Marant, Anna Sui, … The shop (first housed at another spot) almost had to close, but an employee and a very good customer saved the shop and reopened it in Lombardenvest. Thank god for that!

I don’t try to go there that often, because it is quite expensive (and you always see something you really really want), but when sales start: I’m there! I have a small size and they always have a lot of trousers in small sizes left. And prices really go down a lot! I once bought a new pair of Notify trousers, for only € 70!

The Botanical Garden Antwerp (by Tinneke Voet)

The Botanical Garden and its 2000 noteworthy plants have their origin in the herb garden belonging to the medieval St. Elisabeth Gasthuis, which is still a hospital today.

I often have to go there for my work and I don’t mind that at all. The Botanical Garden is situated in the shopping heart of the city (behind the Meir, Huidevetterstraat, Schuttershofstraat) and gives you the opportunity to step out of the busy shopping area into a quiet, calm world of plants and flowers. People of Antwerp often go there to eat their sandwiches or read the newspaper. Even now in winter, it’s lovely to just walk through the garden to escape from your busy Christmas shopping. And don’t forget to drink a coffee in ‘het Gebaar‘, the establishment in the garden that won a lot of patisserie prices!

It’s a hidden treasure and my favourite spot in Antwerp.

Witzli-Poetzli Antwerp (by ysabel jongeneelen)

The Witzli-Poetzli (they say the name comes from the book The Master and Margarita from Boelgakov – Huitzilopochtli is a wargod of the Aztecs) is a very small café in the center of center of the citycenter. It is next to our great cathedral. In the summer there’s an unique terras in the shadow of the cathedral. In the winter it is a cosy place where people come to drink coffee and read a newspaper.

In the narrow street of the Witzli are no cars allowed and there are practically no shops. It is a passing-through-street. A lot of people pass by and from the Witzli-Poetzli you have a perfect view! In winter there’s a lot of wind in the street, so you can see very funny situations that happen to by-passers.

The former owner – Guido – died very sudden in December 2008, a couple of weeks after a fight in his cafe. This was a enormous shock for a lot of people in Antwerp. And of course: what would happen to the Witzli?! Antwerp wouldn’t be te same without! We are very lucky that a former barman took over the café and that he keeps the Witzli like it was.

I visit the Witzli-Poetzli a lot. It is the most ideal spot to meet friends or to rest after a walk in the city. But the most important reason is their white coffee (café au lait). I never drink white coffee, but it is such a genius form of white coffee that I always want to drink it when I come there. Don’t let them tell you something else.

Don’t leave Antwerp without tasting the Witzli-coffee!

Zwarte Panter Antwerp (by Ysabel Jongeneelen)

The Zwarte Panther (Black Panter) is a famous art gallery in Antwerp where I walk in from time to time. In the Hoogstraat, a small street where no cars are allowed, you wouldn’t expect this interesting complex building with nice spaces, a cute inner court, a chapel, a cellar and a little house behind the chapel.

In 1303 it was a little guesthouse (Sint Julianus Gasthuis) where poor pilgrims could stay a while. In 1968 the gallery opened. They say it is the oldest gallery in Flanders and the second oldest in Belgium for contemporary art. Adriaan Raemdonck, the gallery owner is passionate and takes his job very seriously.

There are almost permanently exhibitions by famous artists like Fred Bervoets, Jan Cox, Pjeroo Roobjee, Sam Dillemans, Jan Vanriet and many others.

I find it a an interesting place, not only because of the great art you can find there, but also because of the location from the Middle ages. The chapel (restored in 1956-1958) is simple but beautiful, the art in it is special. The inner court is idyllic, the rooms upstairs are light and pleasant. The art of Fred Bervoets is impressive.

Once in a time I walk in, and enjoy this oasis in the city. It is a spot where art meets history and that’s a good marriage.
