This is absolutely my new favorite in Antwerp! It’s not known by many people but a real treasure to cherish. Il Gallo Nero is an Italian restaurant owned by a Belgian – Italian couple. It’s Italian, but the Italian man handles the service, his wife takes care of the excellent dishes. You ‘ll find some great Italian dishes here with a touch of Belgian influences. The food is of great quality here. What adds more to the charm is the nice man who serves you. He’s Milanese born and only speaks french & Italian (fluently). He explains everything he serves in a way only an Italian can. The food, the people: honest, nice and excellent quality. And while you are there, take a moment to enjoy the nice scenery you’ve entered. Some nice paintings and some traditional Italian kitsch…this all served with carefully selected music by Italian crooners. Had dinner with 4 here on Sat 31 Mar 12 and it was not a good experience at all. It took at least 30 minutes after we had sat down before any drinks were served. When we wanted to order, at least 4 dishes were no longer available. When ordering a 2nd bottle of wine, that wine was no longer available. We ordered a different wine, which was poured into our old glasses. The wine was not chilled enough and not kept in a cooler at our table. The second course took 30 minutes to arrive. We skipped dessert and coffees. The Italian man was offended that we were complaining. The food was all right, though. It is impossible to run a restaurant this size with just this one man serving. I for one will not go back here.
This place was absolutely lovely! Food was divine, especially pasta with black truffles which were shaved in front of our eyes…. I loved the ambience, very friendly and charming service. The best dining experience in Antwerp this far
Pity that they were closed last weekend! I was excited about this place so wanted to go here when visiting Antwerp! Maybe next time!
