Finally, after Spain and many Latin-American countries (even Rotterdam has the Markthallen, check the Markthal article), Belgium now has its own food market ‘Mercado’!
It opened on the 15th of October, so it’s already been through some months and a cold winter in Belgium. You will meet many local people here, as we are all excited to explore our food market.
Mercado is situated in the city center, at the Groenplaats square, close to the Cathedral. It is located in the old Post office. For a couple of years, the city Antwerp invested in preventing house-vacancy. This effort gives new ideas, services, products, events, etc. the opportunity to find their place in a special building.
This market doesn’t only have a functional purpose like buying food. No, come here, taste the creations of the shop-owners, get inspired to buy and try new ingredients, taste some fresh fish, get lost in all the odors and spices that surround you.
At some small corners, you will find pop-up stores with non-food goods.
