One visit at my digital and/or physical space would be enough to convince you of my love for maps. Maps of the World, maps of Europe, creative, nocturnal, strange, non-Mercatorial… To give you some further idea, this is my current desktop while I’m writing this and this is a map I made of my imaginary country of origin (big story!). It’s no surprise then that the minute I entered Anavasi Travel Bookstore close to Syntagma Sq, I just fell in love.
Even though Anavasi specialises in hiking and climbing maps that cover the rich geomorphology of Greece and its many secrets, and actually started out by making and publishing maps themselves, this little corner shop has taken it to the next level: globes, travel guides, star charts, children’s atlases for the next generation of geography nerds, travel photography portfolios, gift ideas…
I have actually bought various presents for friends here, and last time I was there I got a couple for myself: a huge World Map mouse pad for my desk and a DK Publishing book on knots (with some rope tied into the book itself for practice!) In other words, you don’t have to be a map freak to find something that will move your compass.
For the true local travel fans out there, here’s a tip for you: go over to the very polite and helpful assistants and ask them for a guide on the Athens urban walking routes… to complement your Spotted by Locals app of course!
