Athens is definitely not a bicycle friendly city. Not only the landscape but also, and most importantly the lack of infrastructure, are the main reason for that. Recently, some people are trying to introduce the bicycle as an alternative, environment friendly and budget friendly transportation means. And they are doing a good job: the bicycle fans are increasing and a walk around the city will prove it.
One of the most important groups of people that promoted this idea are the creators of Friday-Freeday event: every Friday at 21:30 Thisseion square, outside the metro station, is the starting point of a 4 hour bicycle ride around the city. It started with just few cyclists gathering but now you can see as many as 1000 bicycles.
The route is unknown till the last minute, but is doable for everybody. For more information you can visit and google-translate the facebook group.
So, if you are in Athens rent a bike from Funky Ride and join Freeday! Except the fact that you will visit parts of the metropolitan area that you wouldn’t, the feeling of cycling with many others in some of the most crowded streets of the city is awesome!
