This spot could not be more obvious, both for Athenians and tourists alike! “Hidden” in plain sight, the National Garden stands next to the Parliament and the Syntagma square, waiting for all of you to pay a visit and relax!
My usual walk within the National Garden, includes my dog, “Kuku”! I take her there to give her some space to run and enjoy and also get some time for myself to exercise. Find one of the multiple entrances to the garden and just wander around the numerous paved paths. You will find spaces of green to sit down and enjoy the sun, benches to sit with your book and a small cafe on the northeast corner of the garden, to sit and get a coffee. You can also buy some seeds from the wandering salesmen that roam the park, to feed the ducks in the little pond!
Sometimes the park may be closed due to a visit of foreign prime ministers, etc., as it is very close to the house of the president of the democracy. Try Aigli Zapeiou when it’s open, either for coffee or a movie in the summer cinema!
The National Garden is the closest thing to nature inside the city centre! Don’t miss out on the chance to relax from the noisy Syntagma square and make sure that you combine your visit there with a visit to the Evzones in the parliament square (see my Evzones – Tsoliades article!).
