Need to breathe some cleaner air?
Feel a need to jog, cycle or stroll with your thoughts?
In the mood to catch a different view of the city?
Yes? Sounds like you need to get up here and chill.
The Carretera de les Aigües (the road of the waters) is a 9.5 kilometre track which snakes a route along a contour through the hills overlooking the city. The route is called such because the track was, and is occasionally still used by the water company to access water distribition facilities.
It’s a very popular route for local mountain bikers, runners, joggers and strollers. Because the track follows a contour it’s easy, level going, apart from the start/finish point at the Font de la Mandra in Esplugues de Llobregat where there’s a car-park, picnic site and bar-restaurant.
Ironically, given its name, the track is often very dry and dusty, especially after a herd of bikers have ridden by, but there are water fountains along the route to help keep you refreshed.
If you want solitude – avoid Saturday/Sunday – it is very busy.
The constantly changing views of the city from up here are fascinating.
To access the route you can:
A) Take the 196 Bus or Tramvia Blau (the Blue Tram) from Avenida Tibidabo/Plaça John F. Kennedy to Plaça del Doctor Andreu (and the funicular terminus for Tibidabo) you’ll pass Mirablau on your right and then follow the road for 10 minutes until you reach the start.
B) Take the Valvidrera funicular.
