Until a few years ago, I didn’t know vegetarian cooking could be so nice and even exciting – even though my body sometimes exclaimed for a non-meaty meal. La Báscula, a small place hidden in the middle of small streets at the heart of Borne, is a good example of how good work and good ingredients can turn into superb plates without needing meat protein.
The menu changes from season to season to include new and fresh ingredients, but if you’re really hungry you can be sure that a big “bocadillo” will completely satisfy you. It’s not that you have too many things to choose from, but more a lot of possible combinations. Be daring and go for a sandwich that you have never tried before – with an unexpected ingredients like apple, perhaps – and enjoy the texture of good natural bread.
One thing that I absolutely love are their frozen cocktails, with or without alcohol. But they are not typical ones: I keep on falling for one called “Corazón Latino” which is fresh strawberry with red wine and a lot of ice. Beware – some items on the menu might not be available off season.
You can sneak into the kitchen and see the hectic movement. No credit cards accepted, no fancy china – just plain nice food. They do have a bike parking, though. Go healthy and try…
