This corner restaurant doesn’t seem like much – a quick glimpse at it and you might dismiss it as a “touristy” place (it does after all belong to the hotel sitting right above it which bears the same name). Something special happens here every weekend though, the place fills up with locals, mostly people from the neighborhood. They happen to know that La Ciutadela serves up one of the city’s best paellas, in the form of an unbeatable € 17.80 set menu.
I especially love this place because it’s already very difficult to find bargain set-menus during the weekend, most restaurants only offer them Monday through Friday during lunchtime. Here you not only find this menu all week long, but you do so at any time of the day (the kitchen is open non stop every day from 13:30 to midnight) and at the hands of a chef that has been assigned a “rice specialist” award (which they proudly display on the building’s façade).
Its location also makes this a great weekend spot: on warm days what we usually do is have lunch on the outside seating area followed by a walk through the Ciutadella Park or the neighboring Born district, enjoying not only the paella but also the great surroundings!
