Sirvent is the most popular ‘horchatería” in Catalonia because of its ‘horchata’ and ‘turró’. Let me tell you a short anecdote first…One year ago I traveled to the United States and took a day to visit some distant family members, they LOVE turrón, I don’t know why…well, it’s delicious but they are crazy about this sweet (my mum made me take some turrón in my bag).
Sirvent oh! I love you in summer for your horchata and I can’t forget you in winter for your turrón… Oh Sirvent! I can give you lots of boring information, but I just wanna let you know I have never had horchata from other places or from a random brand bottle from the supermarket, it’s just not the same.
Horchata is a refreshing drink made from the tubers of the nut sedge plant called ‘chufas’, horchata has a white, milky appearance and is served ice cold. It is sweet and very tasty!
Turró is also incredible, but it’s a lil’ bit more expensive than horchata and people just buy it for special events. Families usually buy turrón in the supermarket from other brands, cheaper and with many different flavors, it is hard to keep up. For example, chocolate, white chocolate, yema, praline, and even pistachio!
It is typically made of honey, sugar, and egg-white, with toasted almonds or other nuts, and usually shaped into either a rectangular tablet or a round cake.
Enjoy it!
