I have a summer birthday – late July – and a very Mediterranean mother who insists that all members of our family go out on a family lunch for our birthdays. The person celebrating always gets to choose where to go… any place at all. These past years I have chosen Xiringuito Escriba every single time.
They serve, in my opinion, the best paella in Barcelona. By far. Add to this the fact that there is no nicer setting you could be eating a paella in (beach front, so close to the water you can hear the waves crashing in) and the fact that the nice folk running this place also own one of the city’s best bakeries (so you can find their wonderful desserts on the restaurant’s menu), and you can probably understand why I go back for more every single year.
If it’s a nice and sunny day you can enjoy the views by sitting at the tables outside. If you’re inside, though, you can benefit from seeing the paella chefs cooking the beautiful rice dishes right in front of you, a very eventful scene.
I hope you take my word for it and don’t leave the city without having visited Xiringuito Escriba. As they have wisely printed out on the restaurant menu, “Rice brings happiness!”
