Topčider park – An amazing 170 year old tree

The main attraction of this park is a huge tree that was planted there over 170 years ago. The branches are so long that they have built support columns in order to keep the tree alive. The tree is not only leaning on the columns, it started growing on to or eating them as I like to say. It is under protection of government so it’s safe from being chopped down.

Now, a little history behind this amazing tree. Prince Miloš Obrenović used to live in the house behind the tree. One day, a long, long time ago the Frenchman managing the park’s maintenance asked Prince Miloš what to do with the single remaining sycamore seedling. The prince ordered the seedling to be put in the nearby lime pit and buried. And now many many years later we have this humongous tree to be proud of.

My other favorite thing in the park is the little river that goes through the park and ends up in a stone fountain. Also you can relax in a very nice restaurant and have lunch or dinner.
