@Amy: So far, I never heard of, nor experienced, something like what happened to you. But nevertheless, I feel sorry for what happened to you. At the same time, I hope that this will not happen again, neither to you nor to anyone. I hope you will not be totally disappointed by your Berlin experience and that you keep loving Berlin is spite of that.

This is short and to the point – I was turned away from the door at Farbfernseher (seitenstrasse) after having paid the entrance fee and was verbally harassed by someone who claimed to be the “owner” of this place. There were a group of people who just stood by and watched this scene happen, this after I opened the door for the man. I am a college educated, highly qualified woman who has no experience of being treated like trash because of the color of her skin – please don’t think I am naive enough to believe it was anything else, I was the only person of color in proximity, and if there is the possibility it was not racially motivated, it was nevertheless a shameful display of verbal violence over an ordinary person. I love germany and have been here for a year now, but today I was ashamed to be here and sickened by the shame people can bring to their own community.

Great bar, great staff, cool vibe, fantastic tunes.

Almost perfect unless you want to breathe like a normal human being.

Sadly, the cloud of cigarette smoke you will encounter means you’ll be unable to do so. Thus our visit was cut short. Berliners still slaves to Big Tobacco apparently.

It is a very fascinating place, but not for the faint of heart. The energy of all that occurred there is still present in the bricks, in the plaster, in the floors. The story you will hear from the guides is truly horrifying. I’m glad I went, but in the end, I found it very depressing.

I was there some time ago and I thing it’s better to wait till the end of the year to “see it properly”. The exhibition is crammed in a very small space and everything seems a little bit rough and ready. But I must admit it’s a great idea to serve tea and coffee exactly where it used to be served for the officials of the building.
