I discovered Deriva recently when a friend’s exhibition opened there. It’s a comfortable bar with great lighting, friendly staff and excellent drinks. The owners are Italian, which might explain their elegant approach to preparing classic cocktails.
I’ve had a lot of experience working in cocktail bars, making complicated and over-priced drinks, so when I go out, I compensate by sticking to the classics; drinks that thrive on their simplicity. I ordered Deriva’s Negroni which was made perfectly. They used good quality ice, and the size and proportions of booze were well-balanced, proving to this local that somebody behind the bar knows what they’re doing. The current trend around town is to serve whopping drinks for 8 – 9€, but Deriva resorts to tradition: a small drink intended to be drunk quickly for maximum flavor and effect, sold at an equally small price.
The front bar room is cozy and non-smoking, but there’s a room in the back that you can smoke in and hosts live concerts and comedy nights in both English and German on a regular basis. I’ve been here a few times now, and I’ll definitely be returning!
