HAU – Theatre & other fairy tales

Three theatre houses on the shore, each one of them more daring than the other. Hebbel am Ufer – HAU – reaches beyond their venues through various projects in their neighborhood and other parts of the city. One can watch the 1st of May street spectacle in Kreuzberg from a rooftop while listening to an event-specific soundtrack. And if the stage does not wander through the city, then it opens up in 100 degrees for the street to come in – HAU regularly launches an open call to all for a long weekend.

One can spend the end of the world at HAU in a theatre-marathon for both actors and audience. Meaning the Gob Squad performed an eight hour improvised-group-therapy-multiple-session on December 21st 2012. One can be outnumbered by hundreds of ‘actors’ – hundreds of locusts and scientists in a piece by Rimini Protokoll. Is it a theatre room, or a laboratory, or the moon? And by the time you come up with an answer – it starts raining inside. And by the time you get out of the theatre house – Cardiff’s & Miller’s boat-installation is parked in front of it. The story is only the beginning.

Tip: HAU 2 comes with WAU – meaning their restaurant, a good stop to take a measure of the place’s pulse.
