While I have never been especially thrilled by the second-hand fashion choices this city has to offer, it does have some amazing second hand shops for furniture, housewares and tchotkes. It seems surprising to me that so much is on offer when you consider that this city lay in ruins after WW2 when that Biedermeier dining set was more useful for kindling than anything else.
To be honest though, in this city you are more likely to find some fun 50s or 60s Mid-Century furnishings than anything pre-war. And it depends on how much effort you give it. To find the really great stuff you either have to dig through, sometimes literally, piles of junk or pay through the nose to someone who has already done the dirty work for you.
Along Urbanstrasse though you’ll find both kinds of shops (on a recent trip I counted six!). The bit between Greafestrasse and Grimmstrasse is particularly rich with options. I won’t give away all my secrets but if you are willing to get your hands a little dirty, you will probably be rewarded!
