Open air cinema in Berlin is a hot topic during the summer, even in mild spring. There is a high competition to find the best cinema under the stars. Normally you will find them in large open places, without any seats at the beginning and quickly filled by deckchairs. It is different in Freiluftkino Mitte, it is a real cinema without a roof.
As a tourist you will probably end up in Mitte, walk around in Hackescher Markt and there’s a great chance you’ll walk down a passage still heavily decorated by posters and colorful paintings on the walls after passing by Café Cinema. Usually people stop in front of the robot/sculpture in front of the bar and at the door of the Kino Central. What you may not know is that this cinema runs a small open air cinema one backyard further! I noticed it once while going to the cinema, wondering why people were queuing in front of the back door.
Before the movie starts the doors to the backyard are opened and a minibar is waiting for you. Seats are already there. Compared to the other open air cinemas in Berlin, this one has an interesting program, full of old or recent classics, without any blockbusters and they show the movies in their original language. I really like this atypical open air cinema, you feel at home, it is like watching a movie on your balcony.
