Eating foods according to their season is a tradition in Germany. Find a red, ripe strawberry in summer here and you will understand. In late spring and early summer in Berlin you’ll find seasonal foods you won’t find the rest of the year: white asparagus, ruby red rhubarb, wild berries from the forrests around the city and wild garlic – bärlauch, one of my favorites. Get them when you see them, they are never around long.
There are loads of fresh markets in the city, and it seems there are new ones springing up all the time, but every Thursday and Saturdays the streets around Kollwitzplatz in Prenzlauer Berg are given over to a large fresh market. You can find everything from fresh, locally grown, organic fruit and veg to homemade pasta, cheeses straight from the dairy, herbs and spices, fresh fish and even organic meats.
