Berlin has a lot of exciting venues for discovering contemporary art and culture. Since opening its doors in 2010, Ufer Studios GmbH has become a hub for the contemporary dance and free theater scenes and has contributed to bringing new energy to the surrounding neighborhood. I first discovered it right around when it first opened, when the performance piece I was in held rehearsals in one of their newly converted practice halls.
Located on the banks of the Panke, the site once served as a transport construction yard. It now functions as a performance and education space, including a theater hall and former garages that have been converted into rehearsal spaces and studios, offices and ateliers. The Inter-University Center for Dance and Tanzfabrik Berlin also have their base here, where they put on regular performances. Check their website for tickets to upcoming events and parties.
I love coming here in the summertime when there are pop-up parties and concerts in the tower at the western edge of the complex.
Also, if I’m in the neighborhood at lunchtime, I like to hit up Kaffee Pförtner, a lunch café just opposite on Uferstraße! I love their coffee, their delicious bread and sitting on the minibus-turned-dining-hall out back!
