The Volkspark (people’s park) Rehberge is another rare green area in grey Wedding and thus very popular with locals and not-so-locals, and popular at all seasons. Among the bigger parks in Berlin with about 110 ha, it has a viviarium with wild boars (which tend to freak out my friend’s dog when visiting), sunbathing areas, four lakes, playing fields, an open-air cinema in summer and even a toboggan run for winter times.
Volkspark Rehberge is liked and used by all sorts of people all year round – and especially by dog owners, as this is one of the few Berlin parks were dogs allowed to roam free. Right in the centre of the park there’s the replica of a 1930s monument to writer and former foreign minister Walther Rathenau, the so-called ‘Rathenau Brunnen‘ (Rathenau foutain) which the Nazis had destroyed and which was re-instituted here in 1987.
