In a cool research project, it was analyzed where tourists and locals take photographs in 122 cities in the world. It’s a great way to see for example where tourists concentrate in a city.
How did he do it? Eric Fischer analysed publicly available photographs that were “geo-tagged” (you can see where exactly they were taken), and checked out if they were taken by locals (people who took pictures over a period of more than 1 month), or tourists (people who took pictures in a city for less than a month).
Blue dots were taken by locals. Red dots were photographed by tourists. Yellow points are pictures where it can’t be determined if they were taken by tourists or locals. On the picture above for example, you can see tourists in London concentrate mostly on the very center – around Westminster & Trafalgar square for example.
I checked out which cities in Europe were most photographed by tourists. The top 10:
1. London (pictured above)
2. Paris (check the detailed image)
3. Berlin (check the detailed image)
4. Barcelona (check the detailed image)
5. Amsterdam (check the detailed image)
6. Edinburgh (check the detailed image)
7. Madrid (check the detailed image)
8. Helsinki (check the detailed image)
9. Stockholm (check the detailed image)
10. Rotterdam (check the detailed image)
