I recently escaped the clutches of The Man to become a freelance writer and blogger. Originally from New York City, I am currently spending the next year traveling across Europe with my fiancé, singer-songwriter Dan Coyle. In addition to writing and traveling, I enjoy photographing my misadventures and posting the evidence on my website.
I’m excited to be a new guest blogger for the Spotted by Locals team! Here I’ll be writing about some of my favorite subjects: not only the experience of traveling, but also seeing the beautiful cities of Europe through the eyes of locals. As a Couchsurfer, I get lots of amazing suggestions from people I stay with and I can’t wait to share them with you here. In the weeks preceding our visit to Slovenia’s capital city, I actually spent time listening to Google Translate pronounce “Ljubljana,” then repeating what I heard. Prior to that, I had always pronounced it as “Luh-JOOB-leh-JAH-na,” which of course would have given locals a reason to make fun of the silly tourist. › Show full article
Unlike so many of the other destinations on our year-long tour through Europe, Budapest was anything but last-minute. In fact, we had planned and scheduled and organized almost our entire autumn around the fact that we would be in Hungary’s capital city. Like most children, I grew up reading the stories of Hans Christian Andersen and watching films of those fairy tales come to life. Visiting Denmark – and Copenhagen especially – became a particular yet peculiar dream for me: I felt drawn to it thanks to his remarkable works, yet I knew little of his hometown’s history or culture.
I expected Copenhagen to feel like a sunny winter morning when snow has fallen overnight: cold and clean, beautiful and fresh. It did – which is why nine days was hardly enough to explore this wonderful town. › Show full article
