Clues, riddles and dark rooms – A new trend

Trapped, Bucharest (by Alexander Olteanu)

Trapped, Bucharest (by Alexander Olteanu)

There’s a great new trend afoot in some of our cities! Several of our local bloggers have written reviews about places that offer a unique experience. Use your brain, and your friends’, to solve clues and riddles to escape from a room. All within a set time limit. Fancy yourself a detective? Here are five places, that our locals have covered, where you can test your skills.

Pictured above is Bucharest local Alex’ attempt to escape from Trapped. While in the picture it looks like they’re not having much luck, we have it on good authority that they managed to get out. Without spoiling the fun too much, we can tell you that Trapped has 3 rooms that each offer a different experience. “The Elements”, “Don Vito” and the last one added is ‘The Bunker”.

Athens Clue (by Andreas Papadopoulos)

Another recommendation comes from Athens local Andreas, who unfortunately didn’t solve the crime at Athens Clue in time. Try to solve the murder of a police detective, track down the whereabouts of two little kidnapped children, investigate the disappearance of archaeologist Jack Travis, or find out the true identity of the mysterious doctor Lev Pasted. Plenty to keep you entertained for 50 – 70 minutes.

Mind Maze, Ljubljana (by Tjasa Janovljak)

Mind Maze, Ljubljana (by Tjasa Janovljak)

Tjasa’s favorite escape room is The Alchemist’s Room by Mind Maze in Ljubljana. The quest here is to find the golden egg stolen from Ljubljanica’s dragon. You have 60 minutes on the clock, but Tjasa’s group was able to make it out in 50 minutes. Because all the clues are either numbers or symbols there’s absolutely no language barrier in play!

Theodora Ralli from Thessaloniki is a fan of The Mind Trap. This one has even more options for you to choose from. Nine thematic rooms, each one with its own story and riddles to solve in order to find keys to open locks and doors until the final one that takes you out. We do have to report that Theodora has given it a shot twice, and hasn’t succeeded yet. So lots of skills are required, make sure your each member of your team brings a certain capability to the table :-).

Escape Room, Manchester (by Paul Coleman)

Escape Room, Manchester (by Paul Coleman)

Manchester local Paul sets the score at 3 out of 5 Spotters that didn’t solve the clues in time to escape. To be fair, he did choose one of the hardest rooms at Escape Room. And even though they didn’t make it, the mood is set, they’ll definitely give it another try.

Belgrade local Xavier also mentioned aMAZEing Escape in Belgrade. Are you familiar with any of these, or is there one in particular in your city that you just can’t seem to solve? Please refrain from leaving tips in the comments below, while we want our Spotters and readers to succeed, it’s more fun to solve the riddle on your own! But all in all, this has got to be one of the best ways to spend an energetic 60 minutes or so with friends and family. Find out if you’ve got nerves of steel or not.

Oh and we forgot to mention, there’s a member of staff watching you via a camera and maybe they’ll help you out a little. Nothing like the SAW movies at all…

Take our tips with you.
