This week’s Spotter in the spotlight is Martins Veidemanis from Riga!
Martins has lived in Riga since 1995 and studied there years before. During his free time he enjoys wandering across the streets searching for inspiration; tiny things like a forgotten shop name painted on a wrecked house, a chestnut full of blossom bending by the side street or simply for a kind of muffins. Martins has been a Spotter for almost 3 years now and having him as part of our team has truly been wonderful.
Martins loves Riga because, “I was spellbound by the architecture” and because Riga has that very special “beauty-spot” where he met his wife for the first time.
A small selection of Martin’s favorite spots:
This fabulous spot is filled with different stores and other places such as a cinema, shops, a hotel, many restaurants, cafes like Buržuja Brokastis, a barber shop, and a fitness center. If you are looking for a place where you can spend your whole day trying out different activities then this is the perfect place for you. Furthermore, Bergs Bazaar is a car free zone and that makes it a calm and romantic place especially at evenings and nights when the lights are on. This is certainly a spot you do not want to miss out on when in Riga.
Are you looking for a nice and quiet spot to shop, then this is right spot for you. This project called Otra Elpa (Second Breath) is a charity shop where many socially responsible folks and craftsmen donate various goods like books, fashion, dishes, CDs, toys etc. for others to purchase for a nominal price. Profits are then donated to various social projects. Shopping is more satisfying when you get to help others in need and this place is beyond amazing.
According to Martins “this restaurant offers fantastic food”. The menu is elegant, according to the season and local ingredients are used as much as possible. Most of the recipes have beer in them and there is a recommended beer for each particular dish. If you are looking for a magnificent place to enjoy a cold beer and delicious food then checking out this restaurant is definitely a must.
Local tip from Martins: Taste a variety of Valmiermuižas beers or locally produced “brandavas” – homemade liquors.
This cozy and hip spot is a combination of a shop, café, workroom and a parking space. Bicycles are the main focus at this amazing place. However, that’s not all this spot has to offer, they also have a delicious menu filled with vegetarian delicacies that you will surely enjoy. Stop by to enjoy a different relaxed and fun ambience with friends at this incredible place, either for breakfast, lunch, pancake brunch or dinner.
The busy city life can get a bit hectic at times and finding a peaceful place where you can relax is definitely a must. Luckily in Riga this fascinating park has “the most amazing lawns for picnics or lazy days in the sun, with a large playground for kids and not only them, with a beach, with beach volleyball courts, a cable wake park and a cafe and concerts for free from time to time” writes Martins. This is the best place to enjoy a day with your friends and family just like the locals do.
