The secret is out. If Boston Magazine naming Blackbird 2016’s best donuts didn’t completely give it away, Adele shouting them out at her September concert at TD Garden certainly did.
Now that we’re talking openly about it, Blackbird Donuts is amazing. It’s hard to go wrong with any of the flavours, and between old school cake donuts and pillowy glazed options, there’s something for every kind of dessert fiend.
From the outside, the shop doesn’t look like much. Buried in a brutalist structure a thousand miles from the rest of the South End’s style, you’d miss it if you weren’t looking for it. Even the donuts themselves are served in an old school pizza box, as if to throw the uninitiated off the scent. But the vibe is overall hip without being offputtingly industrial or twee.
My personal favourite is a summer seasonal special; a passion-fruit glazed risen donut. It’s huge and chewy with just the perfect amount of resistance to it with every bite. The passion-fruit flavour also reminds me of an ice cream popsicle I used to eat as a child. It tastes utterly like summer and transports me back to simpler times.
Forget Dunkin’. These are the donuts Boston should be judged by.
P.S. Adele likes the Boston Creme.
