It’s actually in Cambridge’s Central Square, not Brookline, and I only ever go for breakfast food – but there are few better diners around than the little hole-in-the-wall named Brookline Lunch. Founded in 1937, this family-run café is currently run by an adorable husband and wife pair, specializing in cheap eats and a casual atmosphere. Brookline Lunch is located just around the corner from Mass Ave, which runs down the heart of Central Square, on a quiet side road named Brookline Street, from whence the restaurant got its name.
One of my favorite aspects about Brookline Lunch – in addition to the cozy, welcome atmosphere, and affordable prices – is the way it steps beyond the traditional diner definition. Brookline Lunch mixes together Middle Eastern and Greek style breakfast and lunch classics, with traditional Americana diner food (think bacon and eggs), to make a unique menu all their own, and all good.
My personal favorite is the Greek omelet (pictured above), which is served with overflowing Mediterranean style fillings, home fries, toast, and a pickle – all for only $ 6.25. No complaints there.
However, whatever you go for will be sure to impress, due to Brookline Lunch’s focus on ingredients that are locally fresh and available. No two orders will ever look exactly alike at different points in the year, as whatever the set menu items are constantly being updated with whatever is seasonal that day. Meaning, there’s always another reason to come back.
