Three Bates College students started brewing unfiltered cider in their dorm’s basement, and now they produce one of the best ciders in the Northeast. It would be the rest of the country too, they just haven’t expanded that far yet.
Downeast Cider was started in 2011, but has already come to be one of the city’s best loved beverages, successfully marrying the unfiltered, sweet cider of your childhood autumns with the booze you know and love as an adult. You can find their products, both seasonal varieties and the classic staple, in bars and liquor stores across Boston, but the best deals are found at their taproom in East Boston. Not only will you get a tour of their facility, but plied with as many varieties of cider as you can name along the way.
Tours are only available on weekends, but hanging out at the taproom, playing some boardgames on upturned barrels (my girlfriend beat me at Jenga, Connect 4, AND Battleships), a little cornhole, and trying the variety of fresh unfiltered options and limited batch runs on tap is an awesome way to spend a day off. And if you enjoy hard cider as much as I do, you can also buy in bulk here. It’s just more economical.
