Although you wouldn’t guess it due to its simple exterior, Japonaise Bakery and Cafe is truly one of Boston’s hidden gems, and a one-stop-shop for Boston foodies. After all, where else can you get an almond croissant accompanied by a Thai iced tea?
Japonaise specializes in Japanese baked goods (Green Tea Cake, Ichigo Cream, Melon Pan), French classics (Creme Brûlée, Fruit tarts, Pan Au Raisin), and pastries that appear to be a blend of the two cuisines. Besides their amazing pastries, Japonaise also sells ice cream, coffee, tea, and various Japanese candies and groceries. The staff are friendly and helpful, the atmosphere is cozy and casual, and it’s my go-to place to stop for a latte and cinnamon roll on a chilly Boston morning.
For those that don’t have a sweet tooth, Japonaise also offers many savory products. Besides their breads, they also have rolls baked with veggies, ham and cheese, turkey, and even egg salad. A must-try if you’re feeling adventurous is their curry doughnut filled with beef, onion, and carrot.
